Cross platform video chat - 06.13.2012, 01:41 PM

Hi, I am in need of a cross platform video chat program. My son is in the US Army in Germany. His notebook computer is equipped with Windows 7. Our home computer is running Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS and XP. I LIKE using Ubuntu. 1. it's FREE 2. worms, viruses, and trojans are pretty much a non issue 3. Microsoft sucks. I am not a software guru. Yes, I can go over to the DARK SIDE(XP) and use Skype-but I'd rather not if there is a workable Ubuntu to Windows solution. We have tried Skype(Beta) and Linphone but they both screwed up badly-not usable. Is there a SIMPLE solution? thanks, Don

Looks like Google Chat/Talk/Voice will probably be the best solution for you from what this page is saying.

If you still want to use Skype specifically, you could run it from within a virtual WindowsXP inside Linux. Assuming your box is fairly up to date and you have a good amount of memory (~4GB), this might work for you.

I have VirtualBox set up on my wife's Mac running virtual WindowsXP and it works reasonably well. Her daycare business requires data entry into a website that only works in IE for some stupid reason.
