Anyone play Hawken?... - 02.25.2013, 05:54 PM

http://www.hawkengame.com

A while back I came across an advert / trailer for this on youtube and was immediately struck by how awesome it looks; basically a first person shooter, but with big stompy robots instead of army dudes. Not quite like Mech warrior, this is much faster paced and action based, though of course strategy does come into it. I got accepted into the 2nd Alpha test, & 2 closed Betas and was hooked, even playing it with my old PC with crappy graphics card on low settings. Well, I built a whole new rig & custom mod'ed a case, and now I spend most evenings playing this- it's such a blast & was hoping other r/c guys might be playing it or would be willing to give it a try.

It's totally free to play, you only have to pay for cosmetic items ( mech skins and different style body parts ) if you want to ( showing off essentially ). Will run really well on a modest PC setup too.

My call sign is SuicideNeil ( of course ) hopefully I'll see some familiar names in the future

I wish I could stand playing many kinds of games with mouse/keyboard. Never could get the hang of it. I stick to my trusty xbox. But that game does look fun.

I quit gaming when I became paralyzed. I no longer have feeling in my hands, and todays games (pc and console) just have too many buttons.

I can be somewhat competitive in racing games that just use a joystick and 2 button gas/brake.

After years of r/c-ing I'm getting okay with the 2 motions of a pistol grip controller thanks to muscle memory. In the beginning my car would veer off course and I'd look down and I had dropped the remote in my lap!

No feeling is the same reason I don't get into flying r/c's. Too damn many controls.

I would love to rock first person shooters. I can't wait until video games are controlled by brain caps.

If pistol-grip radios work well for you, you could get one of those USB adapters to allow you to use one with your racing games. :)

That sucks Harold, though I can think of one instance when having no feeling in your hands is useful for tricking the mind...

As for keyboard vs game pad/controller, you can bind the keyboard controls to a pad if you prefer ( or the main ones ). I'm a game pad man myself & have been since the days of the SNES & PS1, though it only took me a few weeks to really get the hang of using a keyboard ( WASD for movement ) & mouse ( aiming & firing )...
