Now that i have my first E-Revo done, I am considering converting my second one. However, I'd like to tak eanother look at using the revo tranny. But I dont understand tranny operations well enough to make the decision yet. I understand that on electrics, the motor supplies the braking and reverse operations, thus the entire gear train turns the same way as the motors are. On a Nitro, there is a secondary set of gears that will engage to provide reverse. Thats about as far as I understand it.
What does a center diff provide?
What features in the nitro tranny prevent it from functioning like the emaxx tranny? I'm sure this relates to the above question.

Also, now that Traxxas has released their own center diff, does this change the scenario (compared to the posts about creating a center diff)?

All you need to do for motor brakes and reverse is lock the Revo tranny. It has a one way bearing in the tranny. Simply lock it and you can use motor brakes. Also, the center diff allows the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds for quicker turning. It also keeps the front wheels on the ground. The only thing I found about using the Revo tranny was that it was hard to mount the battery on the left side.

Keep in mind when you lock the one-way you will loose the autoshift, and make it single speed. A nice thing would be to sacrifice reverse, use mechanical brakes and keep it 2 speed. Just a thought.

Danfi, I'm not positive, but I don't think you would loose the 2 speed since its nothing but a centrifugal clutch that slings out when up to RPM. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, a centrifugal "clutch" will engage the second gear, but you need the oneway to disengage the first. See? In order to have two separate gears, you need a oneway. At least that's how I understand it. But I have been wrong bevore. Pretty sure on this one, though.

Dafni, you are absolutely right. When the tranny spins fast enough to engage the centrifugal clutch into second gear, it will then spin faster than first gear so there has to be a way for first gear to float freely in this case, hence the OWB.

YOu can keep reverse with a conversion. Mount the motor and run it foward only just like the nitro. You have to have a servo for reverse and gears for it. It is like a quiet nitro though. I did this with a savage. The reverse didn't last but it was fun. I had a bigger motor though. 22 series.

I'm starting on a Revo conversion and was thinking about the inavailability of the strobe slippers. I'm wondering how to do the maxx tranny w/ slipper pegs/ 32p gearing (ie don't want to). Are there other reliable setups for BL power? Maybe Traxxas will release a emaxx update that uses Revo style clutch? Everything else went this way so i'm sure its a matter of time, Hmmmm....

edit:

I may have solved my prob. Besides a strobe the only alt I see is the RR setup (as mentioned in 10 other threads answering this,) but these use 32p gears. Good, but I hope to do better. I wanna try the maxx tranny on account of the battery mounting issues.

Finnster, altough the Strobe is the best option and I like them alot, I still have some trucks with the stock traxxas spurs. On one I use a high power brushless under hard driving conditions, and still the same traxxas spur since I assembled it almost 2 years ago.
Just have to keep the mesh correct. The only real downside is, you can't dial in any slip at all, or the gear will melt. Use 12 pegs and crank the spring down, it should hold up. And spur gears are not hard/expensive to replace.
Still, my money is on the strobe, though. Just wanted to share my experience with the stocker.

Hey dafni. If you want a mod 1. The mgt spurs will fit right on where the maxx ones are. The spring is bigger and has the slipper pegs as well. Just to let you know.

Thanks Dafni. I had the stocker with the emaxx w/ full pegs and cranked down spring. It didn't ever melt, but I really don't like driving trucks with no slip. It just seemed really hard on the whole drivetrain with so much instant TQ. When I did have some slip, if it wasn't done carefully, the slipper would get really hot and was nearly melting the spur.

A simular thing in my Bl rusty. I do have slip in there, but any time I overtighten it, zzzzzzz goes the spur. They are easy and cheap to replace, but extremely annoying and can quicly end a good bash session.

The point looks moot for me however, it looks like I've been able to get a hold of a strobe. :) I like the idea of mech brakes, but the brake servo/ batt mounting issue is enough for me to just go with the maxx tranny. If I had lipos I could see going with the revo tranny, but I have lots of NIMH, so the "Dafni" :027: style setup seems the best for me now. I'll keep the revo tranny maybe for a while and see what I like, I could always change it if I really don't like it. I'll keep y'all posted!

Finnster, on your Rusty, you would always get the new Revo style slipper. They allow slip and one thing I like about them, you can change the spur without messing up the slipper settings.

Yeah, I'm just waiting for them to come out and me to strip my last spur. :) I'm excited for the new setup, I really hate fiddling w/ the slipper pegs.

I'm running a Robinson slipper with a Novak HV brushless and have no trouble. I am going to a 7XL and mgm 16024 soon and will let you know how it works

It shouldn't be a problem as Finnster managed to get a hold of a strobe. I wonder how he did that? :032: :dft012:
