Brushless Revo - 03.23.2005, 11:13 PM

I posted my Evo on the traxxas forum a few months ago.
Here's a link with pics:
http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...hreadid=259433

I have been racing this against the nitros since Jan and have had good success. The driver needs some work though ;)

I made some upgrades. I added corbon fiber push rods, aluminum shock rod ends and a RD quick turn to mention a few.

I tried using GP2200's last week to shed some weight (almost a pound) and they worked great. I was able to make it through the 12 minute main without issue. With the 2200's the truck wighed 11 pounds 2.3oz.

I also mounted a plate to the stock transmission and am using a Robinson double disc slipper clutch and 65T steel spur instead of the 1.0m stock spur. I had to shave some material off of the chassis to get the clearance for the 65T spur.
To get close to the gear ratio I had before I am using a 24T pinion and a 65T spur. This settup is great. I'll need to take some new pics to show off the motor mount plate.

cheers

I did see your conversion Dafni, very nice job.

I too, was going to use the emaxx tranny but the drive shafts are located too low and would not allow room for my battery packs. I am better off with the Revo tranny because of the automatic two speed and the ability to easily use the RD quick turn.

If I decide to try a Lipoly solution, I will get rid of my bottom plate and mount the Lipo's on the top of the chassis where the gas tank was.

Your truck looks good. Do you plan on racing it?

Thanks, your truck is also cool!

Yes, LiPopy .... at the moment this is an upgrade that remains too pricey for me. Plus I have a heap of 7-packs. This has to do for now. But it´s tempting, I will definitely keep an eye on the development of these cells.

Racing, well, I would if I could. But there is no track in my area. The hobby is not too popular here, but it´s growing.
I will mainly drive it on a small track I have in a nearby wood, racing all by myself. And bash it in my backyard, where I also have a small 8-shaped "track".

What is RD quick turn?? Could you please explain it to me?

I love this EMaxx tranny! It´s great to have the possibility to keep it in first, for small tracks and stuff (s´what I mostly have) still with insane BL speed. And then you can shift it up and kill any nitro MT on a straight.

You can see the RD quickturn from the RD Racing site: http://www.rdracingproducts.com/stor...products_id=80

This basically places a one way bearing in the front drive shaft so that the front wheels of the truck are not effected by the brakes They get power from the motor but freewheel otherwise. This allows you to rip through the turn without locking up your front wheels. It helps a bunch during a race when you need to power through a turn.

The EMaxx tranny is a very good transmission. But since I'm racing my truck, the trucks center of gravity needs to be as low as possible so the placement of wheight is crucial. My batteries are placed under the chassis and the BL motor is mounted on the side of the truck. The automatic transmission is adjustable so you can dial the shift point right out of it to keep it in first or adjust the shift point anywhere else you want/need.

I have had the most fun with this truck. I can't wait to go racing Saturday :)

Ah, I see. A one-way for up front. I have one on my Twin Force.
I never felt the need for this on my EMaxx, but now that you mention it .... do you know of something like this which would fit an EMaxx?? I could customize it into my Revo.

You know what would be even better? A center diff! I plan to put a center diff in one of my next BL Revo conversions.

I´m not worried about my CG either. The batts make it lower than a stock Revo. And I don´t seriously race it.

Have fun on the track! Do you race against Nitros??

Ya, I'm the only electric guy on the track where I race, the rest are nitros. The MT's racing are mostly Revos with a few LST's and a savage every now and then. I still have to pit in the main :C:

I mounted a T-Maxx tranny to my Revo but I had to cut way too much material off the chassis to get it to fit. This was due to the high placement of the output yokes. I also had to use a combination of T-Maxx and Revo drive lines with the T-Maxx tranny. What drive shafts and yokes are you using? You may be able to use the RD Quick turn if the length is the same for the front drive shaft. I couldn't tell what shafts/yokes you used from your pics but you sure did a clean job on your truck.

I just finished my latest project. Its a MBX-5 I converted to brushless. Unfortunately I fried my controller from overheating it. The gearing seems to have been too high. The buggy has a center Diff and it seems to work well but I need to gear it way down for this application. A center diff in the Revo would probably work well. Less weight too. I'd be really interested in seeing the center diff installed. I'd rather make the mistake of gearing the truck down too much than too high.

Okay, thanks for the reply.

As for the RD oneway: I have a longer shaft up front than stock. At the moment I use Maxx sliders, but I will soon have 1/8 buggy center driveshafts. This should be BL proof.
As for one way in general: Have you ever seen the Mad/Twinforce´s Onway-setup? I could modify my Maxx tranny output shaft to hold a oneway-drivecup.
But the RD is definitely a cool design.

Yes, BL conversions are a great thing. Enjoy the hobby. I like the build up of trucks as much as I like driving them. That´s why I already started with my second Revo. I´m not sure if I will go with an E tranny on this one again, or if I use a center diff. I would have a nice design for a motor/diff-mount in mind.

I would love to have a track here in my area, believe me. Have fun tomorrow:cool:

Starscream, you gave me an idea! I came up with a home made one-way shaft! It's not yet finished though, but I know it will work.

Stay tuned for pics. It will be finished as soon as my order from RC-Monster arrives.

Anyway, thanks for inspiring me.

My shaft will also work for Maxx trucks, btw.

Right on,
I look forward to seeing pictures :)

I think I have found a safe Lipo solution. FMA Direct has a 6s Lipo pack and charger scheduled to come out in a few months. The packs will be pricey but from the description of them, they sound awesome. The packs have a special wire for charging/conditioning the pack. The packs will also have an onboard voltage cutoff. I will be eagerly waiting for these to become available. The 6s packs are much like the scorpian lipo car packs schedule for May. The scorpian packs are lower voltage (7.4v) so I will wait for the 6s.
You can check out the scorpians here: https://www.fmadirect.com/site/wolf/scorpionSplashPage/

No problem Daf,
Your setup inspired me to try out a different setup and saved me half a pound of weight. I saw your post about the Lehner motor setups, I'm probably going to try out the Lehner xl1600 on 24 cells on my Evo. I've taken second place the past two weeks in the A Main against the Nitro's. This last weekend, I found out the hardway, that my GP2200's only last 15 minutes. Even though the batteries tanked at the end, I still took second.

Here's some pics after the race... notice the heat sink motor clamp ;)

Looks good! I Like the yellow stuff, rims and wing. Looks buggy-ish :D , just better!
I like those 23mm wheels with their big hole.

Hey, 24cell Lehner..?! Wow, Nitros beware!
Do you run the stock springs? I switched springs to one step stiffer and like it alot.

I also got this heatsink in my mailbox lately, and my controller just got a nice dual fan mod.
I tried my homegrown front oneway, and liked it alot. It requires a different driving style, I will throw it in for tight tracks. It also held up good so far, and was a cheap self-made hop-up. But my usual center shaft setup now is a custom made titanium dogbone thing, 1/8 buggy style.

Hey, what's this thingy that's zip-tied to your front body-mount?
Velcro rules, too:)
How's your truck balanced? Left to right, in generall. And front to rear, compared to the Nitro?

The Wabash 23mm wheels are great for tight tracks. RD is comming out with aluminum axle carriers and a 23mm hex adapter solution that looks impressive.

I am using 60 weight oil with Gold springs up front and the black springs on the rear (2 steps higher than stock). This setup has been working quite well for me. The truck is balanced nicely front to back but the weight is a little off center to the right rear because of the placing of the batteries. I initially thought this would cause performance problems but the truck handles very well and I have been very happy with the results. I will use a similar battery mount when I get my Kokam Lipo's. The Lipo weight should be more balanced due to the weight decrease and placement.

The thingy zipped tied to the front body mount is a small piece of lexan used to mount a transponder. The transponder is used in races to count the laps of the truck.

This truck keeps up with the big block nitro's .21+ and has an edge on the stock nitro Revo's.

I'd be interested to see your one-way and center dog-bone setup.
