First Brushless Setup, WOW -
05.01.2005, 11:30 PM
My BK 7018, 8s, heatsink/clamp arrived in the mail last saturday. I've got a rustler thats been built for bashing but i also race at the track. I figured BL was the way to go, High speed and maintaining a 10t or lower motor would be alot of work since i run a few packs everyday.
Well, i assembled it sunday mourning just a few hours before races started. My friend has a BL 1/8th so i was ready and prepared for what i needed and how to set it up(reciever pack/programming of ESC). I had tim to run 1 pack through it before races started. :-/ I ended up being Top-Qualifier but DNF for the main due to radio interference. WOW, this thing has power. So fun i havent had time to post on here about it. Just got home from today's racing, finished 3rd with it, # 1 and 3 were BL, now people are pissed, and the track put a ban on Brushless Motors, for the 5 people that run them. The President of the club is talking about making a BL class, i hope so. Some of those brushed guys with the 8-10t motors were even pulling on us, its not like we have more power on 6 cells, nobody ever complained untill we started winning, retarded. People have been running them for 3 years at the track, nobody ever said anything, but this is the first time someone placed 1st with it.
But anyways, bashing is so much more fun. I've run 20-25 packs through it in the last week, havent busted a single part on the drivetrain(except the melted slipper, that's locked now), the diff is fine. I've done a few 10 and 12 cell runs, i'm really impressed with the power BL has. Once my buddy remembers his GPS i can get some ## on speed. WIth 12 cells, it looked even with my buddy's 1/8th on 18cells, and we clocked his at 52MPH with 18cells not that long ago.
About the heatsink, if anyone is planning on mounting it to a rustler tranny, your gonna have to cut away the motor cover from the bottom screw all the way to the top of the tranny. Leaving the motor completely exposed. If you cant make a skidplate/motor guard to protect the motor, I wouldn't recommend it because you WILL destroy the moter leaving it in the open like that. I made mine out of 1/8" alu and bent if so it comes up halfway over the tranny. Its taken alot of hits and holding up great. On 6cells the motor/esc barely get warm, 10-12 it gets hot, but i can keep my fingers on it forever so its not burning hot.
Mike, great site, great forums, very informative. I love wheelies.

Its hard to tell from the pics exactly how much was cut off if you dont know what the rustler tranny looks like. In pics 3 and 5 you can see how far up i had to trim away so the heatsink would fit. Its cut away all the way around to the very bottom screw that hold the tranny together, the screw that lines up with the lower clamp screw on the clamp. Trimming that much away, and not making a motor guard like mine would MOST likely result in the motor slamming into the ground when you jump it. The guard i made has taken some landing from 15+ feet and hasent bent at all. I finally stripped a spur gear today, after around 30 packs through it, and thats the first thing on the drivetrain that has failed. :D
Even with that much trimming, you wont be able to set a proper mesh with anything smaller than a 87t spur/17t pinion, it just doesn't fit. As you can see i'm bumping it up to a 90t spur.
Before you all ask, no, i dont use the stock radio, that just happened to be sitting there for the past few months ;)

Is your rusty durable?
The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

Wow thats a lot of cutting. I just got my lehner 4200 and a heatsink today. I am going to take a look but the motor is very small.

Is my rusty durable? HELL YEA it is. My regular bashing buddy runs a Ofna 9.5 9L 9918 on 14 cells, and i break parts on his sometimes :D
I regularly make jumps that would clear cars no problem. I'm planning to jump my pool on 12 cells once i build a ramp. Our regular bashing spot is a skate park. Alu castors and Front Shock tower help ALOT. i used to bust front shocks every other run, and figured it was due to the stock front shock tower having so much play/flex that when i landed wrong, the shocks compressed at not so good angles bending them or busting the mounts. The RPM rear arms are there because i busted the stockers after jumping off a 30foot drop. Alu castors are a MUST for a basher. I still have 6 pairs of stockers on hand because i used to bust them so much. Havent busted the alu in 5? weeks now. I run 2-3 packs a day atleast, and rarely break anything now. Between the custom steering links/tie rods, those 2 alu parts, and all the RPM stuff, its got a nice weight/strength ratio. That melted spur is the first replacement part i've had to get in 3 weeks.
As long as the drivetrain is greased and shimmed properly, these tranny's are more durable than alot of people make them out to be.
