Losi 8ight Buggy setup? - 04.17.2007, 02:40 PM

After seeing GD's 8ight buggy and a few others I decided to convert one myself. I recently got myself one off ebay. The big turnbuckles and big shocks make it like a great little buggy.

I'm going to need a good setup, something that runs pretty cool. That would be the most important part because it will be run in over 100*F temps. Then being light weight would also be good. I just need average speeds 35-40MPH.

I'm planning on putting the motor on one side and lots of space for a Lipo pack on the other. I was thinking of a MM and Lehner motor.

One problem I've seen with one pack setups is overheating the lipo towards the end of the run. In my old MBX, even with a Flight Power 4s 3700 and many different setups and gearing I have yet to beat the heat problem.

So, I need a cool running light weight motor that works good with the MM and lipo pack that can handle the demands. What would you guys recommend?

Well, if you were running a different ESC, I'd recommend 5s or 6s on a higher turn motor to reduce the current.

What about using a higher capacity pack, which will heat up less than a smaller capacity pack on a given current.

What are your battery trays made of? If plastic, it will hold the heat in. Maybe some strategically placed holes to help airflow? If metal, the holes might still be a good idea since most people use some kind of padding reducing the heatsink properties of the metal.

On the Ofna MBX I have a AE battery holders which proabably does hold heat. I had not though about that. It might be worth changing that. On the Losi, I was planning a flat piece of Aluminum with velcro and also a Gorilla strap.

I have also though about Quark and 5s and maybe a Neu motor, but I have not heard much about setups like that and how hot/cool they run.

What would be a good cool running Lehner motor for 4s?

Just based on kv... I would choose between the 1940 8 and 9 turn.

Gear either of them for 35-40 and they should work great.

I know glassdoctor runs a Neu, but is still using a MM to my knowledge. I know he put his Quark in something, just can't remember what exactly. I'm running a Neu and Quark in my Hyper 8 and it stays just warm despite the high KV motor and tall gearing. But I do have extra heatsinks on the ESC.

Pretty much any 1940/1950 LMT motor will work if you follow the 40krpm "golden rule".

18/46! Amazing!

I can get my Quark to cogg ocasionally on my CRT. I think it is a little over geared though.

I actually have a Neu 1512 2000kv motor that is not in use at the moment, maybe I'll try that with the MM again.

GD, do you have any heat issues on your 4s 5000 mAH pack?

No heat issue with the 5000 pack, but I have also not run it from full charge to full dump either.

The Quark cogged a bit once when I was runing on the track... after I stopped for a minute and went to go again. it wasn't bad but it did do it.

18/46.... :) and no apparent issues either other than a bit more cogging... still worked fine. I raced it all day.. TQ and win too.... I didn't check temps though. I was VERY busy running three cars and helping run the races.

Doc, how are the reactions you're getting from the people at the track who run nitro against you?

GD: Recommend the MM w/ the Neu? - 04.18.2007, 04:55 PM

Glassdoctor,

It sounds like your experiences with the Mamba Maxx/Neu motor combination has been positive. I'm building up a brushless 8ight myself, and I've already acquired a Neu 1512 2.5D to drive it. I like the easy programming ability of the MM, and I feel like it would fit better in the 8ight chassis. Would you recommend it, or should I go with the Quark 125. I'll be running 4s LiPo batteries.

Thanks for your help.

If you hardwire it and run a good lipo... I guess I can't say no. It's just hard for me to recomend it due to the history of issues.

I will say that it still does cog a little and if you aren't careful.... it may be possible to smoke it. Just be sure to never pull full throttle to try to get it to go if it cogs.

I have developed a habit of normally giving a little blip of throttle if the car is stopped, to get it at least to move a little. It very rarely cogs this way and if it does, it's not pulling huge amps like when you grab a lot of throttle when it's cogging. When someone else drives it, I just tell them to let off right away if it stutters or doesn't want to go. Really it's not much of a problem... only does it occasionally. I think the right word for the MM/Neu combo is "tolerable".

The Quark is butter smooth... so that makes it a tough choice. I'll still with my Mamba, and hope that CC has a fix very soon.

The season hasn't really started here yet. But last year I never heard any serious complaints... only a few good-natured "not fair" comments.... and a lot of those questions like " but how long can you run?" and "what are you going ot do for the main?" Then I get to give them the bad news that I can run the main non-stop on one pack... :005:

Now.... I am a little concerned about what is going to happen this year. Especially if I run it on the ridiculous 18/46 gearing. I can't put into words how stupid my car made the nitros look. :004: I think I will gear back down to 16/46 just to make it look more like a nitro.

But it still comes down to driving and results.... I will have to win before I expect to hear serious complaints. And that won't be easy even with a better car. There are some very good drivers here...

By the time people make a big stink I will be about done racing on Saturdays anyway. I plan to race 1/8 some in May and June but not much after that.

A little off-topic here, but GD, why aren't you racing past June? Are you still going to do the Wed night thing?
