Ice charger and Lipos?? -
06.12.2005, 10:11 PM
Does any one use their ice charger to charge lipos? if so, what size lipo do you use and how do you like it. I guess i may not understand the callouts, the ice says up to 4 lipo cells, so does that mean a 4s pack?
thanks

I have one and have used it once or twice for Lipo. I prefer the Astroflight for Lipo charging. The Ice can charge up to 4s Lipo.

so is it safe to say that I could charge a polyquest 3s 4400mah on my ice?
and then is it safe to run it with the mgm80 and the 6s motor?
thanks

The charger will caharge it and the controller motor will work, although 3s LIPO is a little much for the 6s motor.

what would you recomend as far as lipos go, Mike? I dont want to cook the motor, but it sure seems like the 6s has alot of limitations. Could you also recommend a good strong and fast motor to couple up to the mgm (be it a lehner, hacker, etc)?
thanks

The 6s is a hot motor and , therefore, has some limitations regarding voltage and applications etc.. Any high rpm motor will require the same diligence. The 6s can handle a 3S Lipo pack, but it is pretty hot and is ultimately better off with 6-8 cells. A motor recommendation would require some background information, such as the vehicle it will go in, along with the tires, terrain and ultimately, what you are trying to achieve.

basically i am running it in a highly customized t4. the truck is redesigned for onroad use only. it has be lightened and the rotating mass in the drivetrain is prolly the lightest of any other t4 in existance (in case someone wants to contest that, i am a designer, so i know what i am doing). My goal is to get this thing as fast as possible. with an unmatched 8 cell pack and while carrying a gps, i am getting 45.5mph. i want to see 60mph with this truck while carrying the gps. I would like some longer more consistent runtimes which is why i was thinking lipos. I am also open to buying a new motor if needed.
thanks
oh yeah, tires are usually road dawg, or road rage2

The 6s on 8 cells should get you close with strong cells and the right gearing. I would probably run a Lehner basic or basic xl on 4s Lipo for the speed performance you are looking for. The basic xl motors are good if you want to run for a while, as their larger size will allow them to run cooler. The 3600 or 4200(either size) on 4s Lipo would be quite the performer. I run a 4200 on 3s Lipo in my tc3 (and its FAST).

what about the basic 5300? would the mgm 80 be able to handle that and a 3s or 4s lipo?
thanks

Yes, the 5300 should be alright on 3s, but for long runtimes, I would use the xl5000 (These will both be similar to the 6s, actually). You can push the 6s for speed runs(gear up).

The 6s will be fine with Lipos, really! 32 Lipo on the 6s will run like nobody's business, but it will run a little hot is all. For higher voltage applications, I always recommend a slower motor to capitalize on the efficiency available, but if you simply a speed freak, then strap some voltage to the motor and hang on.
