Transfer my current setup to a lighter vehicle.... - 08.29.2007, 08:14 AM

Hey everyone -

So I have this massive brushless Monster GT sitting here, and I can see in crystal ball that I'm going to end up with one of the new MGT 3.0's, the 1/10th truck coming out in October.

The new truck is a claimed 8 pounds ready to go. My truck now, loaded up, is 15 pounds, which is pretty heavy.

Currently in my truck, I have a 1515 1/y, with a modded Quark, so tons and tons of power. I only run 4s LiPo too, and I still have plenty of power.

If I swapped my current electronics to the lighter truck, and just geared up a bit to make up for the excess power, would it still be too much? Would it be better to throw a 1512 series in there, maybe a lower kv too?

To save money, it'd make sense to use what I have, maybe at the worst get 2 batteries and series them together to better spread out the weight.

I'm just thinking outloud. I guess it's like someone asking "is the 1515 1/y too much for my E-Maxx?", to which I would probably say yes, unless they had the 1515 sitting in their stable........

I know the setup would run cooler (right?) by just moving it to the lighter vehicle, which would be really great since I have to pay attention to it now especially on those hot summer days.

Throw some ideas my way. I haven't pre-ordered the new truck yet, I'm really hoping to see a chassis layout picture to see if things can be modded without turning it into a mess before doing so, but then again, where there's a will, there's a way!

LOL, talk about "slightly" overpowered. Sure, it'll work, but wow. I would be more concerned about under loading the motor.

OTOH, you could gear that sucker up to the moon for some really high speed runs. You might want to beef up the driveline to handle that kind of torque too.

Don't forget; the new truck is 8lbs RTR, but when you add that heavy motor/ESC/batts to it, the weight will probably be closer to 9-10lbs.

I figured it was 8 pounds loaded with the nitro stuff, so if you dump the engine/pipe/tank, servos, etc., then add in the electronics, I was thinking about 9 pounds or so.

The Neu that I have is pretty heavy though, as is the battery, and the Quark weighs next to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

On the plus side, if I do the smaller truck project, I think I'll dump the mechanical brake since the truck is so light, and use the ESC, unlike now, where I use the disk brake to keep the load off of the Quark. So I can dump a lot of complexity from things with the new truck too.

Yeah, I like simple too; less stuff to go wrong.

Good luck and don't forget that pictures of the project progress are mandatory!

Too bad the truck isn't released until October. I just wrote to Associated asking them nicely if they had a top-down picture of the truck's layout, then went on to explain how I modded my current MGT with a brushless setup, and would like to do the same, etc. etc.

Hope they are nice and throw me a bone. If not, no biggie, soon enough...

caractions site has some pictures of a thunder tiger truck. that is probably the same thing as the associated since thunder tiger owns associated.

anyways cant be 100% sure but I would bet it will be very similar to this.

Has anyone noticed the Losi style two speed?

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise
