Ran into a dilemma... -
10.06.2007, 12:52 AM
Well, I just got the money to buy some more rc stuff . I was sure I was going to buy the Neu 1515/1y motor, but then i started questioning myself and thinking that I would be able to finish my RC10GT with this money as well. So my question to you all is:
Do you think I should finish my RC10GT with the money? Or buy the Neu motor for the Revo? The Revo won't be finished even with the motor, but at least the only thing I would need to buy after this would be the ESC; which hopefully I have the patience to wait for Tekin, Traxxas or CC to finish a large scale 6s ESC.
With the RC10GT, I would just run a MM ESC, with a Feigao 6L motor on a Max Amps 5000mAH 3s lipo pack. All I would have left to buy is the motor mount, electronics, and battery which would be equal to the Neu motor by itself.
What do you guys think I should do? I am hoping to order this stuff pretty soon too.

I love my Neu but it is no fun if it is just sitting there and if you are waiting on Castle well........, but then again I am partial to MTs.....I'd say finish the RC10GT. (I like closure)

WOW a 6l on 3s is going to be a powerhouse, not sure if that lipo(or a rc10 tranny) can handle that kind of power. I would say to go to a 9l and gear up to make up for the lower kv. The L motors have plenty of power, I have a 10l that I run on 4s in a LS10 and it rips! Also have a 9l on 3s in a very heavy tube buggy/pede that easily does 50mph! The 6l will just get hotter faster and draw more juice, I do not see a benifit on 3s for the 6l, on 2s it would make more difference between the 6l and 9l. Just my .02, don't want to see you buying a motor that may not work well for your application.

Thanks for the info linc. If I do end up finishing the RC10GT, I may try the 8L instead, possibly the 9L, but i don't want to be wishing I had more speed. However, I do prefer an efficient and cool set up over a fast and hot one, so I now i just need to decide what I'll do first, and then I'll go into the specific things on the car I choose to do first.
mkrusedc - I am leaning towards the RC10GT right now. It will be nice to finish another project.

The reason I wanted the 6L at first, was because it is about 4100KV which is way lower than the CC 4600 motor which I originally wanted to run, but decided against doing it. I though this motor would run a lot more efficiently than the CC motor and give me more power... I think I'll go with the 7L motor though. 3500KV on 3s sounds just about perfect, and then i can gear up or down depending on temps, and speeds/run times.
I'll wait for a few more people's opinions, and then I'll make my final decision.

if it were me id finish the rc10 so you have one less project to finish. plus you can have fun with it while waiting for the extra money for the revo to come in.
maybe if you wait long enough lutach's esc will be ready (i think it is lutach?)

I like MT's and Neu's, but if getting the revo finished means waiting for one of the new esc's to come out then I'd say finish the RC10GT first.
I don't know how quickly you save money, but I wouldn't be surprised if you finished the RC10GT and had time to save up again for the neu and the new esc before it's released.
Plus depending on the what the new esc's spec's are, it might change what wind of neu you decide to get (might decide to go higher voltage if the controller can handle it). Or one of them could come out with a good combo (good performance and good value) and you might decide to try the combo. I know the motor won't be as good as a neu, but it might be close, and less expensive, hopefully.

The L can motors put out way more torque than a CC motor can. I have compared the CC motors to the feigao s can motors and the s can is much more powerful. I run a 12s in a pede on 3s 4000mah lipo and it has too much power. I can wheely at 35mph if I punch it. However, if you use a l can motor it will most likely run cool no matter what gearing you use, that rc10 can't be very heavy.

I think I'll go with the RC10GT. Now to make a list of things to buy:
- MM ESC
- Feigao 7L or 8L (still deciding)
- RCM heatsink
- Max Amps 3s2p 5000mAH lipo pack (made measurements on the chassis and it should fit)
- RCM motor mount
- servo mounts
- random RPM parts... bumper, a-arms, bulkhead, etc.
- JConcepts RC10GT body
- Moab 2.2 tires
I already have a 16t and 18t pinion, not sure if I'll need any others until I try it out. Anyone have any recommendations for the motor? Anything that doesn't look right...?
Let me know guys.

I recommend the 7S motor, Mike recommended it for my truck and it has been running great since, tons of power, runs cool and plenty of runtime. I'm also running different batteries too, I run the MaxAmps 5500mah 7.4V Saddle Pack.
Just my $0.02

jnev- 7L/MM on 3s is just like the Velineon, except a lot cheaper. Should be plenty fast, and run cooler with the larger can. Of course you could try an XL if you want ultra-low temps and ultra-high power!

I have decided on the 7L motor. I like a lot of power, and cool running.
As for the battery, would the 5500mAH saddle pack be better in the RC10GT than the 5000 3s pack? I noticed the saddle pack is only 2s5p... will 2s give me enough power on the 7L motor?

The 7l is a 3s motor, you could run 2s but it would need to be bigger than 5000mah. The 5k maxamps 3s pack should be fine, as long as it fits!

Hey nastety - what gearing are you running? I looked on Tower Hobbies for some RRP spurs, and there are 11 different tooth option I can get. Which would you recommend me start with?

quick question here.. the 7L has the same kv as the traxxas motor but should be able to pull a higher gearing.. is this correct? I have the traxxas BL motor now but always looking for more power..
