Ok, finally got my HV setup running, but I'm having trouble programming the ESC.

I have a MGM 9032 and a 1515 2y (1100kv). Currently using 10S A123.
I got the end point cal fine, went into programming mode, thought I went all the way thru, but its not saving my changes. Namely I want to do fwd only and lightest brake as I have manual brakes.

Just to note, the tx programming sucks. All other controllers I've had at least beep or flash for the step you are on or the option you've selected. The MGM just does the same 1 beep/2 beeps for everything. Its easy to get lost. WTH are they thinking? Lsatly, still don't have the special cable, and this opto ESC doesn't connect thru the servo cable to the usbcom. PITA. For a $400 esc, you think MGM could have thrown the servo cable in for free...

Anyway, get to end, doing the "enter" to go thru all the steps, get to then end where it stops and doesn't respond, prompting you prog is over and to turn off esc. I turn it back on, and I still have reverse....

Programming is simple. I usually do the A Mode Choice first and then I do the rest. I do the following:

I enter programming and I pull the trigger to brake 3 times and I know I'm at the "CAR" mode one way. I turn the ESC off. I then turn the ESC to make sure it recorded the Mode Choice. Afterwards I just skip Parameter A by pulling full throttle and do the rest of the programming. Just make sure you don't loose count. It was painfull when I first got a MGM controller, but it is easy now.

I tried doing mine by radio once... good thing I have the cable and USBcom!

Finnster, I don't want to be an alarmist, but I had a Compro that wouldn't program. I sent it to MGM and they swore that nothing was wrong with it. When I got it back, I noticed that they had upgraded the software to the latest version. After that, it did what it was supposed to do.

I want to order a MGM 16018, but how can i know if i'll recieve it with the latest software??

I realy don't know if i'll take the Quark or the MGM

The 16018 was easy to program with the cables. Took all of about 90 seconds to do. In fact lately I have been playing with the parameters to see what I like. If you can get the cables I highly recommend it.

I think I posted it in another thread, but I'll try again:

1. Hold full throttle, switch it on.
2. Beeps after 10sec., full brake/reverse. Go to neutral, wait for beeps.
3. Full reverse once, wait for beeps. Hit full throttle if you want reverse enable, then wait for the beeps. This is the "Mode Choice."
4. Hit full reverse twice, waiting for the beeps after each time. Hit full throttle if you want medium brake strength, and wait for the beeps.
5. Hit full reverse twice, waiting for the beeps after each time. Hit full throttle if you want 0.26sec. acceleration, and wait for the beeps.
6. Full reverse once, wait for the beeps. Hit full throttle, and wait for the beeps. This sets it up for automatic timing.
7. Full reverse once, wait for the beeps. Hit full throttle, and wait for the beeps. This will cause the motor to slow down once the cutoff voltage is reached.
8. Full reverse four times, waiting for the beeps after each time. Hit full throttle, and wait for the beeps. This sets it up for 4s Lipo.
9. Range of neutral zone (I think it's also called Dead Band) - you might want to try experimenting here. I prefer 9%, which is full reverse 3 times, and waiting for the beeps in between. Then full throttle, and wait for the beeps.
10. I like to have it automatically correct the neutral position, so I hit full reverse twise, waiting for the beeps after each time. Then full throttle, and wait for the beeps.
11. Hit full reverse twice, waiting for the beeps after each time. Then full throttle and wait for the beeps. This step sets up "freewheeling."
12. Drag brake - I don't want any, so I hit full reverse once, wait for the beeps, hit full throttle, and wait for the beeps.
13. Switch the ESC off and/or unplug the batts. Wait maybe 10sec. before turning it back on and/or plugging the batts back in.

The instructions say there is a certain number of beeps, just ignore that. If you follow my instructions exactly, it should work (as mine did). If not, then either the ESC is bad or for some VERY strange reason the MGM doesn't like your radio system. To rule out the radio idea, maybe you could try a friend's radio and see if it all works the same.

-you seem to have an extra brake in there.. I'm hitting it twice. Perhaps I'm doing it once for programming mode, and once getting it in boat mode? (instead of 2x to go to 1way mode like I want) I did it yesterday before I posted, and noticed the throttle was a bit sticky from before tuning, like the throttle didn't let off quickly even after I let go of the trigger. Was a bit strange

I blew up another TRX CVD while I was testing it out. It'll have to be down for a bit until I can get ti fixed

Ok, got a chance to play w/ it. The extra brake was what I needed. I was putting it into 2way boat mode, hence the weird throttle (thought it was driving like a boat :) just kept coasting off-throttle) Did it again and its now in one way car mode it seems. Thx! We'll see how the rest goes.

I now understand what they are trying to do with the programming and it makes sense now, and its fairly easy. Alot of the confusion came from the manual and the odd english used sometimes. Perhaps some of these points were obvious to others, but there is enough confusion all around I will add my tips.

My biggest source of confusion was in selecting the options I wanted. The bolded parameters in the manual are the default. I was thinking to select something else you had to move the option over with the trigger pushes. EX: Car mode 2way to one way. Default is option 1: 2way mode (fwd/rev). 1way Car mode is option 3. I thought I needed to move opt 1 over to 3 by doing two trigger pushes (to brake side that is.) No.

You do the # of trigger pushes to the option # you want to select, regardless of the currently selected option. IE, to set Car/1way mode, its 3 trigger pushes no matter what mode its currently in.

You confirm the selection by pulling the trigger (ie throttle.) Its beeps conformation, then sends you to the next parameter. Program a new option by trigger pushes, or just hit enter right away to confirm and advance the programming.


If you mess up, you can just turn off the esc and start over, note that any "entered" options are confirmed and saved, so if you want to change them you will have to re-select. If you feel its really messed up, clear the memory by keep holing the trigger to the throttle during the initial power-up (ie hold throttle, turn on esc, and don't let go.) It beeps 4 times to say you've cleared the mem and defaults are reloaded.

Hope this helps. Once you understand their logic, it makes sense and is actually fairly easy.
