Need help makeing my mind up on Tires -
10.20.2007, 11:24 AM
Hello again. I ordered some stuff for my e-maxx but I think tires are next on the list for the upgrade.
I will be kinda race bashing in a very rough track. I will be run 9xl on 6s A123 cells and using the FLM ext chassis. I need something to help with stability. I can not make up my mind on Proline 40 series or offset wheels. It is a shame you can not get both and be really wide.
Does the extra mass of the 40 series have a big impact on power?
Or
Should I be thinking the 40 series gives better grip.
I have gone back and forth a couple of time. about the only think I have desided is I hate tire glue and want to have beadlocks.... Oh since this is bashing run time is important also...

on a rough track i would avoid 40 series.
the 40 series have less side-flex than normal sized wheels; the truck becomes unpredictable
For bashing i wouldn't use 40 series either. the sidewall is skinny, so on jumps etc. the truck takes a beating. I personally like a wide standing truck, so almost all my wheels have offset.
perhaps the proline baldlands are the tires that suit your needs. they come with molded foams, which are much better in terms of quality than normal foams. normal foams tend to get (too) soft after a while. molded foams are known to outlast a tire. a 23mm version of rim would be a wise investment too. (but you need additional 23 mm wheel adapters.)

I have the badlands, and I must say they have some good pickup. I also have some RD Logic spikes mounted on their rims, and those are another level better than the badlands, especially on grass. They have a great hard pack dirt feel, like a lot of grip, but also drifting is very easy and fun with them. But if you say it is a very rough track, then the Badlands might do better in that.

maybe I am loooking at the wrong badlands.... The width was ~2.3" vs the 3" on the mulchers That would mean almost 1 1/2 inches more in width for stability. Am I missing somehting here?

all I do is bash and I use the standard mt size badlands. Hands down the best bash tire I have ever used. The only thing they are lacking in is traction on the asphalt.

They will be generally the same width as other MT tires, you might be looking at the 1/8 buggy version?

Yeah, I find that too... they are hard to control on asphalt, like they have no stability and makes the truck feel very 'sloppy'.

I have also heard really good reviews on the Losi Zombiemaxx tires.

Zombie maxx tires balloon too easy, and they wear too fast. They look like they are a heavier tire as well; I here they are more suited to rock crawlers than racers.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Badlands. The MT tires are a better design and handle much better than the standard Maxx size tires. I would recommend the Badlands, Maximizer rims, and Ofna 17mm adapters.

From what I hear badlands are a heck of an all around tire, just not really good for street or hard packed stuff...
I plan to pick some up for myself when I can.

Yes, they are great, but just remember, they are not a high speed stability tire, after 40mph, they tend to balloon at that point, although not near as bad as some tires, such as the Mashers for instance.

The absolute best tire/foam combos that I've run have been the GRP. Find a set that meets your needs and get them. You won't be disappointed.
