UE Knucklehead Towers-FLM Hybrids - 11.15.2007, 09:09 AM

I was trying to use a set of UE knucklehead towers and when I installed my flm rear hybrid bulk last night I found the knuckleheads towers will not fit - the top screw on the hybrid interferes with the bottom brace betweeen the "legs" of the ue towers and you can't get the screw hole lined up.

I want to run a wing and I have the mount (a DD mount) to run one off the UE towers. I obviously don't want to modify - cut the brace off - the UE towers.

Does anyone know if the DD wing mount will work with the flm towers??

You need to dremel a notch in the tower. I had the very same problem with mine. Easy fix though..

I also used button head screws to give it more clearance.

Cool, I didn't think of trying a button head! I'll swap that one out and have a look to see how big that notch needs to be. Still, I kinda hate to cut on them, but it sure would solve the problem as long as the notch is not real big.

Thanks!

You can make the notch in the center, so you can't see it. I also shaved off a little bit of the bulks. It can be done invisible.

The aluminum as used on the UE towers is TOUGH! it takes time to dremel it..

This worked out way better than I anticipated. I did not have to touch my UE towers. There is enough meat on that top boss for the screw that after changing to a button head, I was able reshape it to fit under the bottom cross piece on the UE tower. The front bulk was done in maybe 5 min using a sharp file. Since the rear bulk was already installed and I did not want to remove it, it took longer, maybe 15min since I had to be more careful not to let the file hit anything else.

The key was changing the socket head to a button head - that changed that areas profile so much it was not that big of a deal to reshape it from there to match th econtour under the UE tower.

Thanks again Serum for pointing that out!

Just putting it out there, but you wouldn't need the wing mount for the FLM towers. They have holes already setup for a wing mount. I think a Mugen fits, as well as others.

Thats good to know in case anyone else is considering the same kind of conversion.

I had a set of Tmaxx diffs in GA bulks that already had the UE towers, mount and wing. After being here a while and doing some reading, I didn't think Tmaxx diffs - even in GA cases with flm cups would handle the neu power to come - reason for chanigng to the the hybrids. Was kind of a surprise for the UE stuff to not fit.

I was going to convert my E-Maxx and as its wound up, I'm building a new one around the extended chassis, hybrids, 125b, neu, cvds etc.

I'm not 100% sure on which wing mounts fit it, but I'm pretty sure that at least 1 Ofna, and the HB will fit.

In case anyone needs to know - this is pasted from FLM's site (which is finally back up!) - the wing mounts that FLM towers -

"Tower has been machined to accept GS Storm and Hot Bodies Lightning wing mounts"

The MBX5 I think it is will also fit, not perfectly, but damn close. Which I have (Mugen) and Serum, mine fits snugly....

I run Dace towers, along with the MBX5 wing mount, for the upper screw in the FLM bulks, I just went to Lowes and purchased a package of M3x.50x16 Machine screw pan head slotted (upc#008236711202) and they fit perfect, and you cant even tell that i used a flathead screw under the tower.... no dremeling or modding needed....
