Question e-revo recomendations - 11.18.2007, 07:53 PM

I asked this to Mike and got an auto response to check with the experts here.
I’ll be running a single speed setup with motor reverse with a MM speed control, with a fan, and a castle ubec, 5s2p A123 pack. It has a 40T M1 spur gear. (this is for bashing)

Wanderer 8 or 9xl?

What pinion do I need?

And I will get the motor heat sink.

I realize there will be varied opinions, and I have searched and read many posts. I am a little confused so don't beat me up to bad....

Thanks
Rick

Welcome to the forums.

I would go with the 9xl. The 8xl will run quite a bit hotter on 5s. As for the pinion... plug in some numbers into BrianG's speed calculator here: http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/

5s A123 has about the same voltage as 4s lipo. I would go with the 8xl. The 5s2p pack will be able to handle the load. The mm may need a fan or griffinru's mod. The heatsink is a good idea.

So is the only difference between the 9xl and 8xl heat??

Well the 8xl will draw more than the 9xl, on an identical setup. However most geaar for around 40mph, which can be done with both. In my opinion the 9xl is the highest kv for use with 5s and the 8xl is the lowest kv for use with 4s. Since you are using 5s a123, sililar to 4s lipo, and the 2p configuration gives you some capacity, the 8xl would be the better choice.''

Feigao motors do run hotter than the higher end types. No way to get around that. I found with testing that around 1800-200kv motors work best on 5s. I am converting most of my vehicles to 5s and higher. Pity the mm can't do 5s lipo, as it is a great esc (and I have 7).

You should be happy with the mm/8xl/5s a123 combo. Just gear for around 40 (I do 38 personally).

i have my 9xl geared to 36/19 and its fast. but with a center diff its really nice. im using a 4cell 4800mah lipo and my run times are about 35min's. so for bashing its nice but i always have to wait on my friends with nitro. lol

Thanks again for the info. I used the calculator and 8xl with 19/40 gives 41.5mph, and the 9xl with the 19/36 gives 41mph. To me either would be good, but would there be any advantage or disadvantage for either setup?

I had mine geared 16/40 for a total of 16.3 FDR. This ran pretty cool for me ( for an 8XL) Reliably did 38-41mph depending on tires.

If you want speed, go for the 8XL, allthough the 9XL is pretty close in preformance. it will run cooler though. (the 9XL) and be less current-hungry.
