Please could someone point me at the sticky re gearing and temps - 01.15.2008, 01:39 PM

Trying to balance blowing up MM on 4s (I think due to cogging) and high motor temps.

I'm going to try direct soldering the motor leads but when I did my last test run motor was V hot to touch esc was cool...

This is for my MBX5 (MSR T) i.e. buggy diffs - 16/46 on 9XL 4S with MT Badlands.

Differential Ratio: 3.3333333333333335
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 46
Pinion Tooth Count: 16
Total Voltage: 16
Motor KV: 1853
Tire Diameter (inches): 5.25
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor coil Ω: 0.0092
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.88 : 1
Total Ratio: 9.58333 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 16.49 inches (418.93mm)
Total Motor Speed: 29648 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 48.32 MPH (77.62km/h)
Effective Speed Rate: 3.02mph/V (4.85kmh/V)
Effective KV Value: 1853

I thought hot motor / cooler ESC was undergeared... It feels quick but not this quick...

I think you are over geared with the buggy diffs and badlands (aren't they closer to 6"). I would try 13 or 14 teeth on the pinion.

At at total ratio of 9.58333 : 1 i'm not surprised that you have a hot motor. For your vehicle, a total radio between 13 and 15 would be normal, a 11 - 13 teeth pinion would be perfect and your motor will stay much cooler. And if it's too slow for you, go up to 5s if your MM is able to handle this voltage.

I would go with a 12 or 13t pinion for your setup. Your motor speed is a little slower than optimum, and 16v is a bit optimistic to expect from a 4s pack under load, I usually stay with the nominal voltage for lipos, as it gives a better indication of voltage under load. I do not think you will have any issues with the vehicle geared for 38mph or so. I would use the 13t, but you may want to go down to the 12t.

I always thought hot motor, meant undergeared. hot esc was overgeared

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise
