New to ERevo...looking for some guidaince

Hi all,

I've spent hours learning as much as I can on this forum and I have a erevo roller with tekno kit on the way. I see some beautiful revo's here and notice alot of the hopups that are not sold here on rcmonster. Can you guys post some links to some cool hopups?

What type of hop-ups are you looking for? Purely bling, or functional things?

Bling and functional. I want to see it all lol. I guess the first thing I'll need is wheels and tires. I mostly bash on the street. Whats a good street tire and rim combo? Just want something economical and durable. Black would be nice.

Wow..I just took a look at all your conversions. Do you recommend not using the clutch on the tekno kit? From what I've read, that would allow me to eliminate the brake servo and use reverse from the motor, while increasing my chances of cogging.

Well, whether you use the clutch or not really has no effect on reverse/brake. However, if you want those features, you HAVE to mod the tranny to lock it into first or second gear. There is a sticky in the Revo forum on how this is done.

I'm not into going crazy with tires/rims since I don't drive well enough for it to make a difference. I do like any set that has a wider offset though since it makes it much more stable. My hopups include RPM arms, RPM knuckles (Al ones would work too), Spektrum radio (AM radios are too noise sensitive with hi-power BL), single hi-power steering servo and proline al arm, and the tranny FOC. Everything else is pretty much stock as far as available hop ups (ones I didn't fab myself) are concerned.

Mike has super strong diffs for the Revo if you don't mind spending over $100 for each diff. You could get Ti arms, CF chassis, etc. It depends on your budget as you could EASILY plunk down $1500-$2500 on everything depending on how crazy you want to go.

What is the purpose of the FOC? Is there any benefit for us that don't race?

How do I know what size wheel and tire to buy?

I wouldn't use Al for the arms because they just transfer the stress to other, harder-to-replace items. RPM arms flex to absorb impacts, yet don't break. And they dye well if you want different colors.

Knuckles are different. You can use Al or the RPM ones because you don't want flex here. The problem I've had with stock knuckles is the pillow balls pop out sometimes, and when that happens, you need new knuckles (even though they may appear fine). The RPM knuckles are a bit pricey IMO, but I got a special deal on mine. Otherwise, I probably would have went with Al ones.

The FOC eliminates rotating mass, weight, and tranny complexity. You don't "need" it, but it's nice to have IMO.

I use EMaxx size wheels/tires. Some types of rims will require adaptors depending on what you get, but the stock Revo rims and any EMaxx rim will work fine as-is. Tires depends on whether you are onroad, dirt, sand, grass, rocks, etc.

Read that one again. FOC is locking the tranny into a forward gear. Second is the usual choice. No need for first on a brushless setup anyway. The benefit is that you can use the esc/motor for brakes and reverse. If you do not do the FOC, you will not have motor brakes or reverse. You will need to retain the mechanical brake, and sacrifice reverse.

Yeah, you really have to know HOW the tranny works.

The FOC simply eliminates the ability to shift into reverse, and all the associated parts (gears, optidrive, shift servo, linkages, etc). Even if you decide to use motor reverse and brake, you could keep those reverse gears in there; you'll just need to find a way to lock the shift fork. The FOC is nice because it removes rotating mass, weight, and simplifies the tranny internals.

The act of locking the tranny in second gear is what makes motor reverse and brake work. So, the FOC and tranny locking really have nothing to do with each other. If you don't do the FOC, you can lock the shift fork into forward but will still need to mod the shift clutch to lock it into second.

Brian is 100% correct. I left out the part about needing to lock into second AND do the FOC.

Thanks guys this all makes sense. I think I prefer the idea of using the motor for reverse and brake so I guess I'll have to get the motor mount. I don't see a FOC for sale here. Where can I get one?

When you compare the amount of parts you put in versus the amount of parts you remove, you'll see why it's a good idea...

There is a guys who gave up his hobby shop who sells revo parts / hop ups cheap over on rctech.net - I think a FOC was $5 - also has lots of RPM / ali bits...
