Jammin cr.5.... buggy?

So I had some free time yesterday and decided to take my crt.5 down to the lhs to have some fun. After shooting the **** with the owner, something caught my eye. It was a kyosho lazer zx-5 body in the bargin bin. It was only $7 out the door, so why not. I decided to do a little mini project. As you may notice, the body needed some liberal cutting and some other random little mods. I had to install a body post on the rear diff case, and one on the front steering brace to hold the body on. If you look closely you will also notice that the body is raised about 2cm from the bottom of the chassis. This was unavoidable. The motor and center diff prevent the body from sitting fully slammed, so I ended up adding some scrap lexan to the bottom in order to "fill" in the gap. I still need to paint it. It should blend in very well once its painted. I finished it off with a set of Academy SBV2 buggy tires I had sitting around.

Here's the result. My Jammin crt.5 is now a Jammin X-1 cr.5

I wonder if they will let me run with the 1/10th 4wd electrics? I could literally drive right through them with this buggy.

Nice! Just put a Lazer wing on it and Lazer decals on the body. Tell them it's a modified Lazer, but don't let them look under the body! You would kill those poor 1/10 electrics! And if they tried to pass you, you could just run into them and break them! LOL!

All I need to do is get some Ben Hur style wheel spikes, and I'm all set!

Did some research on this.... It seems that this buggy set-up is actually ROAR legal... ??!!!.

My cr.5 buggy specs:
- Length: 325mm
- Wheelbase: 243mm
- Height: 137mm
- Width: 253mm (3mm over, but I'm positive that I can trim that off).
- Weight: unkown, but easily exceeds minimum requirement.

Here's a pic from ROAR 2008 rule book. Page 47(section 8.10): 1/10th electric buggy class specifications.

Ok now here's my question. If you were a track owner, Roar representative, or a regional director, etc... (i.e. anyone with the authority to give me a definite yes or no answer). Would you let me race in Official roar/ifmar events with this chassis?

The ROAR maximum width (outer edge of the wheels) of a 10th scale Buggy (2wd or 4wd) is 250mm and a stock CRT.5 with buggy wheels is about 280mm. That is the area you will have the most problems. With the RCM Ext Chassis my CRT.5 is nearly identical in wheel base length to a 1/10 electric 4wd, but it is a lot wider. The other problem you may have is motor. At my local track they only race 19 Turn Brushed or 10.5 Brushless on 7.4 volts. I haven't tried a 10.5 in my CRT (I run a 6.5 on 2S), but it would be a lot slower than a much lighter 10th scale "wheeler" with the same 10.5.

With that being said there are club nights (weds) at my local track that only 4 or 5 wheelers enter. I bet if I asked nicely they'd let me race my CRT.5 as long I didn't get in anyones way. At my track if you race Mod (2wd buggy only and they are the top drivers), the only other class you can race is 10.5 wheeler. So the best Mod drivers also drive wheeler. There's no way I could run with them with a 10.5 in the heavy crt.5, but it could still be fun.

Personally, I am a pretty open minded person when it comes to rules. I'd rather be flexible and have more people show up, than play a hard line. if it fits dimensions, and weight restrictions then who cares? it's down to driver and tire choice

and Cain, see we went with 5200 mah capacity? fight the good fight baby. (we've been emailing back and forth lately). that's a big bump in capacity limits.

Sup Go-ride. My width is actually only 253mm... (sorry I have a typo in the original post). The wheels and tires I am using reduce the width significantly. The stock crt.5 buggy wheels and bowties make the width more than 20mm wider than these academy wheels and tires. Also, as far as the motor goes, yes this would be the big issue. If I am limited to only sensored motors, I may be in trouble, since I don't own any.

I was also thinking of the possibility for further mods if this idea became viable. Like an extended chassis made of 4mm thick (or thicker) carbon fiber, shorter arms from a different kit modded to fit (with cvd's from that corresponding kit), and so on....

Having driven both a AE B44 and a CRT.5 quite a lot I'd say just buy a B44 before you put a bunch of money into making a CRT.5 smaller and lighter. The B44 pretty much rips right out of the box when it comes to a true 10th scale track. With that being said I really love to drive the CRT.5 with either truck or buggy wheels. You can hang it out a lot more than the B44, but a B44 with a 10.5 will just about run with my CRT.5 and 6.5. The back straight speed is pretty close and the distance they jump is very close. The B44 is so much lighter and very dialed for a smooth 10th scale track.

If you want something more durable, I've been hearing good things about the Kyosho Lazer ZX-5. It also uses standard car packs instead of saddle packs like the B44.

What wheels did you find that are that much narrower and still clear the steering rods?

see the above posts for the wheels and tires. And I already own an Academy SBV2 pro, so no need to buy another 1/10th 4wd. Its already race proven and durable.

Honestly, I just want to toy around with this truck because its so well built. Making a variation using the drivetrain seems like an interesting project. Ain't nothing wrong with that, right?

I was thinking of doing the same thing! Nice work! Only thing is, I would defiantly try to get a more 1/8th scale looking body to keep the scale look going.

yeah, the only 1/8th style bodies that come close are the kyosho dbx, and those red cat 1/10th buggy bodies. I saw a DBX body and it was way too big. If you had the RCM ext chassis, you could probably fit the DBX body.

I haven't seen the DBX body, but my buddy has a Redcat 10th scale buggy and that body is way too wide for the crt.5. It's closer in width to an 1/8 scale buggy than a 10th truck.
