Novak/Orion/Reedy motors with a MM? -
05.18.2008, 09:48 PM
I have a few novak motors, and just bought a reedy motor. Has anyone run these motors with a MM with any success? I will most likely put the reedy motor (6500kv) in my dark impact (10th 4wd buggy) on 2s lipo. I have a few spare MMs laying around, and plan to replace some of my others with MMMs.
I do remember that people had issues with these motors before the firmware update. Wondering if the new firmware cured the problems?

I've heard of someone on this forum using a Reedy with the MM. I can't remember exactly who it was though.
I have personally used the Orion Vortex motors with the MM, even before the MM firmware update. They ran as smooth as the Mamba Max motors and ran cooler because of their vented cans and fan rotor. The Orion 5.5 I had ran 38mph in my T4 and in 95F heat didn't get past 155F on a track running for 30+ minutes.

Interesting, thanks for the info Sean!
I guess I should ask how similar the novaks are to the reedy motors. Who makes the various sensored motors? I know that the novak motors are made by them, and appear to be the best of those type sensored motors. The orion and peak are the same, from what I can tell. Anyone know who makes the reddys and what kind of miotors they are (2 pole, slotted, etc.)?

Not sure who makes the Reedy motors. I do know that unless they changed something in their new models, they didn't even come standard with sintered rotors.

associated's (lrp) x-11 series now come with sintered rotors. I haven't run any of them so I dont really know how they compare to novaks.

Pulled the end cap off, and the rotor is carbon/kevlar wrapped. Does look different from a novak rotor, but the windings look similar. I will give it a try in something this week and see how it does with the MM.

the windings should look very similar. all the motors that are roar legal have to be Y wind.

Is the quality/performace similar to novak? I only got the motor cause it was a steal...

I believe the newer ones are close in quality but the older ones (1-4 star with black cans) had a problem with the rotors.
based on the rpm I believe you have an older 3star motor.

Well mine is a 2 star with the black end bells and the titanium center can. Only going to run it on 2s, so that is 48k rpm. Most likely try it out in the xxx-cr buggy first and see how it does...

I've run the SS5800 Novak with a sintered rotor in it pre-firmware update. Ran pretty decently, and would only cog 1/5 of the time if I punched it to WOT from a stand still. I've still gotta try it with the new firmware. I probably won't though since the Medusa runs SOO well (unless of course you want me to try it out and let you know the results, then I'll be happy to do it).
I've also run an HV4400 with the original bonded rotor, and that cogged a little as well (again, about 1 out of every 5 tries I got some cogging). I would assume the new firmware improves the initial start of these motors considerably though.
The Reedy motors rated by "stars" use bonded rotors btw. You can buy a 14mm sintered rotor (vs. Novak's largest which is 13mm, but Novak's rotors are also nickel plated, whereas the Reedy rotors are not) though for the Reedy X-11 motors (should fit the 2 star motor though; may need an endbell swap perhaps).

Nifty info, thanks!
I only ask as I have a novak 6.5r with the 5mm shaft upgrade in a crt.5. MM esc with the latest firmware and a 3s 5000 25c lipo. It cogs bad from a standstill unless I slowly feed in throttle. I have tried a bunch of adjustments, and nothing really helps. I may have a bad esc, so I will try another esc in that truck. It would be nice if this reedy motor works well with the mm in the buggy or the dark impact. I have a bunch of 10th scale that need powertrains!

From a stand still, WOT tends to make 'em cog so I've found. Have you increased start power to high?

Yep, start power on high did make some difference, but not enough. I have tried all of the timing adjustments and also turned the punch control off, still no help. It might be the esc, so I will have to swap it out and see what happens.

Hopefully it's just the ESC. Those dang sensored, iron stator motors are just picky I guess too. Pretty efficient though; especially for how fast some of those suckers turn!
