Zippy Lipo question - 07.08.2008, 05:23 PM

For those who have Zippy lipos, have you noticed that they end up charging all the way to 4.25v per cell? For some strange reason, my little 1000mah 15C 3s zippy pack did this, and the charger has NEVER done this on any of my other two lipos which are 2s (Trinity and Apogee).

Is this normal for the zippys? There's no swelling at all, and the lipos don't even get above room temperature. So I'm wondering what the deal is.

Thanks guys.

Wierd... Why would the charger be able to tell the difference as to which battery it has plugged into it? My charger charges to 4.20 on all packs, zippy or non zippy. Maybe its because I never bothered to tell it is was a zippy pack.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Whew... I was wondering what was up with that. Got a bit scared for a few minutes there. Thanks for the reassurance!

Are you running the Zippy-K packs by any chance (the ones with the 10AWG wires; that was REAL fun soldering deans on to THAT....heh).

I'm thinking it's just the zippy packs. Both of the zippy lipos I have do it (one 3s zippy-k 4300, and the other is the aforementioned 3s 1000mah 15C zippy).

my Imax is set to peak charge the cells, mine have gone up to 4.26.... then you get to fight the High voltage cutoff on the MM :D

Is there a way you can set the charge cutoff on the B6 charger?

If its anything like my bantam BC6, you should be able to adjust the peak voltage setting- the instructions are good, but long winded in that respect...

I think the Imax is a rip off of the Bantam, and the GT Power is a rip off of the Imax... HAHAHA!

I'll look for my directions. I hope I still have 'em!

Maybe. Both of the packs I have from HC are not the Zippy-Rs. I'll try another battery and see if my charger is on the fritz.

I've got the Zippy K 4300 3S pack and the Imax-8 charger. I also see 4.25v per cell on a ballance charge. This is my first experience with lipo's and I was a bit worried at first, but so far everything seems good.

BTW: the Zippy K 4300 3S in my rustler with a mm 5700 combo it is barley controlable. I love it, it weelies on comand at almost any speed. Before I got any highspeed gps runs in I broke the chassis in half oh, well a new one will be here soon.

No. It's RIGHT at the upper limit of the cells max capacity. Overcharging is bad stuff.

I figured out that my charger is way off in monitoring voltage. I tried the hidden service menu calibration, but no success. I can't correct it enough to match voltage for most of my packs (just one).

I just sent the charger back today. You all may want to check your charger's accuracy (compare voltage of your lipo with a voltmeter vs. the charger's readout). There's a mod you can do to also make the balancer far more accurate, but it involves surface mount resistors (and voids warranty IIRC). Soooo, I said eff it and just sent it back. I'll live with my Vision Peak Ultra for a while even if it takes a while to charge my 3s 4300; at least I know it reads the right voltage.
