Odd problem with 9XL - 07.08.2008, 11:35 PM

So my 9XL has been working like a champ in my E-maxx. I took it out and put it in my E-Revo and now it's having an odd problem.

It basically acts like it has drag-brake turned up to 80% even when it's not hooked up to the ESC.

When it is hooked up to the ESC and under throttle it has plenty of power, but it makes the caps on the MM heat up within 60 seconds. As soon as you let off the throttle it brakes pretty hard. I've verified that the drag brake is set to 0 on the MM.

I don't think the problem is related to the MM because it does this even when the ESC is not connected to the motor. If you push it along the ground it doesn't freel-wheel. The drivetrain is new and smooth as silk. The motor connectors are not touching. The gear mesh is appropriate. The motor has never been over 180F.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Think it may be time to check inside the 9xl and see what's going on.

I've read about this before and if yours has a two piece rotor, one piece of the rotor may have come free on the staft and rotated with respect to the other. They are set on the shaft with opposing magnetic polarity and if free on the shaft (mine look like they are only glued onto the shaft) it will rotate. Motor runs sour or not at all then.

if it's a crappy hobbycity one, double check that each endplate hasn't slipped a bit over the threads and got the end of it out of alignment making the rotor touch the windings and bind up. I have had to jb weld one because locktite would not hold it on, the paper thin can distorts and it slips over it. I have another one of their motors with about 6 runs on it that even with the enbell glued there is enough slop to make the rotor short to the windings just by wiggling the end of the rotor. I couldn't figure out why my esc kept getting so hot. Seemed fine out of the car, put in the car set the mesh, roll the wheels, and it would see a short.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I figured out my problem. The screws were too long with this motor mount. I put shorter screws in and now it works like a champ again.

Thanks,

Brian
