Brushless system in my E-Maxx running a bit hot, any suggestions? - 08.31.2008, 03:37 PM

I have a MM/Align 600XL (motor) brushless setup in my E-Maxx. The motor, an Align 600XL, is an inrunner/outrunner hybrid motor, 1650 Kv. I am running a Mamba Max ESC with a Novak 25mm fan and a BEC. My temperatures for the ESC are in the range of 120* to 135*. The motor on the other hand is running at about 140* to 160*. I have lowered the start power to medium and set the timing at 5 on the MM.

This lowered the temps only by maybe 5 degrees at the most. I love the power I am getting, so I don't really want to tone down the settings on the ESC a whole lot. I also have cooling holes in the body.

So, does anyone have any suggestions on how I could cool down the motor? I was thinking about getting a heatsink for it, even though the can is finned, but its a large motor, with a 44mm diameter, and I couldn't find any heatsinks that would fit it.

I was also thinking of some kind of "Ram Air" setup with some kind of large scoop or something for air to go into on the front of the truck, and run a hose from the front of the truck where the scoop or air dam would be and run the hose to the cooling holes in the motor can. I am not sure how well this would work though.

Another fan on the motor might help, but for that I would need to find a Y harness with that looked more like \|/, and I am not really sure how I would go about mounting the fan on the motor or mounting it on a heatsink on the motor.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Those temps are fine. If you have a 5s lipo, try that. I'm running a 600xl with Neu windings, and I have temps around 140 with the 5s. Contact MTXMUGEN on here or aim (same name) and he can rewind it for you. The windings on the Align hybrid motors are not top quality, to say the least. I'm not sure how much he'll charge you to get it rewound, I bought mine rewound and brand new.

Thanks for the info! I had no idea really, I am so new to this brushless stuff, and I have read posts on here and seen videos on youtube where people are running 6S and their motors stay like just above room temp, so I thought that maybe my setup was running way too hot.

And I talk to MTXMUGEN on AIM, I may have him re-wind my 600XL sometime soon.

Just curious though, but would some kind of "ram air" setup work at all?

Actually its not very bad here right now. Sierra Vista has a much higher elevation than Phoenix, its cooler here by an average of 15* in the summer, and today it was only about 85 out. (mostly humid, makes it seem worse)

they say the same about Tucson...they blame the cement in the downtown area of Phoenix for retaining heat...and when I travel north to Flagstaff and Payson you can feel the difference, you will be traveling, it will be hot than it suddenly cools off...its kinda like hitting a wall.
We have a bunch of monsoon storms lately...Thursday night we had winds approaching 100mph and it poured

And also I am running 12 cells Ni-MH and soon 4S Lipo. I just did another run right after it rained here and it stayed quite a bit cooler.

I would go higher voltage on that motor. Align designed it to run 6s. I had one in my maxx but the temps constantly crept up to 180-185 so I traded it out for a neu. It's too hot in Houston to play with temps. However your temps are fine. It is a good motor though and I always liked the sound it made!

I thought about going to higher voltage, but I want the truck to be somewhat controllable, so I doubt I will go with anything more than 4S.

regear it for higher voltage but same speed
