Which ESC to back-up my MMM???? -
09.01.2008, 08:58 PM
Like the title says, which ESC to back-up my MMM? I figure the MMM I just recieved could go up in smoke on me so which ESC would be a good choice to have waiting on deck? My setup is a Savage with tranny forward setup, Feigio 8xl and 4s 25C 5000 pack. Trans is locked into second and gearing is currently 18/47 but can be changed as needed. Also, I will be switching to a Neu motor, 1515 i figure, in the near future. I do not currently have an external BEC but will get one if needed.
Thanks in advance,
Darion

Good question.....I have an MGM 160 that works great....even runs cooler than the mmm.
1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

You could spend $20 and buy a ext. CC Bec (which is alot cheaper than another esc) and run the Ext. Bec off it until the problem has been worked out with the MMM.
If not, than could look at R1 Pro
Losi 8ight
MMM V1 w/1.20
Airtronics MX3 2.4Ghz
TP 5S 5000mah
Neu 2.5D/F

I was just thinking of the R1Pro. Tekin is working on a bigger controller for up to 6s I think...Judging from the positive feedback of the R1 Pro, it should be terrific and give Castle a run for their money. Tekin takes their sweet time releasing products, but, when they do, they are usually very good. Personally, I am willing to wait and use my MGM for now than to buy another MMM until all the bugs are worked out.

if you are running 4s then just get a mm, and a fan, imo if you are only using 4s you really dont gain anything running a MMM, since both my MM have been bulletproof to me

I've about 6 years of experience in r/c electric truck, and i'am 100% sure that is not my setup the problem.
So the pro's guys like you says can run MGM, but this is not the reason that make me buy another one.
When a MMM died it's $169.00, and when a MGM died it's twice the price.
So you don't need 30 years of r/c experience to understand this!!!
If you have lot of $$$ to spend, so go, buy MGM, but for me and the majority of guys here, we don't want to take the chance to spend $300.00 for a controller who can died at any time.
And if 95% of the guys here ran MGM controller, believe me that the number of post like "My MGM died" will be more present here.

Ok, so which ESC would you guys run as a back-up then? My set-up is above and the truck is for bashing. I would like to be able to go up to 6s and have reverse.
Thanks for your opinion,
Darion

My MM worked on Neu 1515 2.5d on my heavy emaxx with 6S A123 (close to 5S lipo) I should say it should work fine. But fans are necessity.. lipo cutoff worked fine for those cells but not sure how it would do on lipo. I know 4S + MM works fine for others...

A mm with a fan is a great esc on 4s. And it should run pretty cool, a tekin R1Pro would be my second choice.
