I think I smoked my motor - 09.03.2008, 06:19 PM

I was running my 10XL, MM, 4S 8000mah in my new erevo for the first time yesterday. Not running this setup for the first time though. I had this setup in my converted revo previously. I think I had it geared too high at 24/58. Both motor and esc were getting hot( around 180esc, 200+motor). But it took probably a good 10 or so minutes of run time to get hot. So I geared it down and tried it out today. within a couple minutes it quite. The battery leads had disoldered themselves from the esc. Back at the shop(kitchen table) I got the esc back together and plugged everything back up with the motor uninstalled. I noticed that the motor did not sound right and that it would not free spin after letting off the throttle, like it was dragging. When I spin the shaft with my fingers it doesn't feel as free as it used to. Also, both the motor and esc heated up within seconds.
Any input? Seems something is not right with the motor. Can you rebuild them? How the heck do you get them apart if you can?
Well if I need a new motor I need a new motor. Has anyone had any experience with the KD-36 motors from hobbycity? I was looking at the 9XL.

Sounds like you de-magged the motor and possibly overheated the windings and they came apart, or loosened up in the can. Throw it away. From what i have heard the hobby city motors are crap. Personally I would say to go with a medusa 60mm 2000kv motor, or save some green for a neu. You may want to send the esc in to CC and have them check it. Better to be sure than roast another motor with a bad esc...

I have one of those red KD 4000kv L motor but really haven't pushed it much yet. It looks like a Feigo smooth can. The 36x60mm 2000kv linc mentioned are nice. Asheck runs one in his Erevo up to a reported 50+ mph.
