The Ike Man Cometh! -
09.12.2008, 12:16 PM
Here comes big Ike, this is getting interesting for sure. Hopefully the rest of my Houstonian brethren and other Texans are ready. I can't believe how much this thing is pounding Galveston and we haven't even seen the storm surge yet.

eek ike - do you hide in the basement and get flooded or upstairs where the roof might blow off! Stay safe... Too late to order a brushless boat I suppose.

No basements in Houston, the water table is to high. I am most worried for the people in the storm surge areas, the rest of us will make it through barring some flooding, wind, and power outages.

My fathers outside Houston. Last time one came through directly like that his neighborhood flooded and he had to buy "waders" from a fishing store to get to and from his house LOL. His was all dry though because its a few feet higher than the neighbors. gl mighty mighty Houstonians.... and sorry about your Astros. Go Cubbies

Ive always wondered what its like to be in a hurricane? Ive seen many tornadoes including massive ones and been in a minor one. The destruction is just amazing to me. Anyways good luck with Ike for you guys that are in his path.

Biggest one I have been in is Andrew down South Florida. Massive destruction and immense amount of force. I'm in NW Houston, and my banana trees look like stranded wires now. Using my A123 batteries in my 10.000.000 candlepower flashlight. So much lighter then the goofy leadacid cell.
Electricity keeps shutting off right now. Just lost my Dish, so only internet to check the weather updates.

Huricanes. -
09.13.2008, 09:34 AM
Well I have ridden out my share of huricanes both in Hawaii and in Florida, and it is a pretty scary thing to go through, but if you are inland far enough the damage is realitively small. I road out Huricane Eva in Hawaii in the early 80's and it destroyed Kuaii. The islands didn't even slow it down with winds over 135mph, and I was in the US Navy then. They called me out in the middle of the storm, because a security fence had blown down that was protecting a top security area. On my way in to work I got to see garages and roofs blowing by as I was driving down Makakilo Drive. The are facinating for sure, but extremely dangerous. A few years ago I was part of the ride out team and Universal Studios in Orlando when two huricanes crossed paths directly over Orlando. What a trip that was.
We truly wish anyone on the path of Ike a safe experience. Good luck guys, and God bless.

West side of Houston, lost power last night really early - 8:15pm before any rain with just light winds. Was a major disappointment, after all the tree trimming Centerpoint has done past 2 yrs - guess was for nothing. Long sleepless night in the heat and the dark.
Heck of a blow - trees and limbs everywhere and most of my 250'+ of fencing is down and torn up pretty good. Was surprised when power came back at 7:45am this morning, maybe can sleep now for a little while this thing rains itself out.
All in all, nothing that can't be fixed. No damage as our house, garage, or cars are concerned. Don't think we'll be going back to work Mon though like everyone so optimistically planned before we left work Thur afternoon.

I was running a 5" B&W TV off my starter box batt for several hrs last night to stay up with what was going on with the storm. Everybody was glad we had the TV for info.

Just got power back in my north side apartment today in the champions area. Still several million without and Galveston and surrounding looks like a war zone. My brother in law who lives roughly north east of Galveston on the coast had 4 foot of water in his house and lost it all including his truck. My parents are just about a mile north of me and still have no power and my brother who lives about 3 miles north east of me as the crow flies has major infrastructure damage and will be without for at least ten more days. My wife the kid and I camped out in south west Houston at my in laws who are still without power. They had gas water heater and stove though which helped things a bit though. Thankfully everyone I know so far is safe which is the major thing. Still lots down here without and prayers are needed.
