Possible to change gear ratio in a losi 8ight truggy? - 09.29.2008, 09:00 PM

I have a Neu 1515 1.5d and I've found myself in a pickle.. this motor is way too much with the given gearing options in my soon to be built 8ight-t electric (tekno v3 based). Anyway the motor is perfect on 4s lipo, but being 2700kv rated it puts the truggy at over 59mph at it's slowest. I can't find any smaller gears for this setup... so I was wondering if there is a way to change the overall gear ratio to help here or does anyone know where I can find a 10t clutch bell for the e-clutch.

Thanks

Actually when calculating it out I would need a 9t or 10t clutch bell, do all mod1 clutch bells work on the tekno v3 electri-clutch?

anyone want to trade a Neu 1515 2d or 2.5d for my Neu 1515 1.5d? It actually just got back from Neu and was a full rebuild so it's like new on the inside, new bearings and all. :)

You can run the 1.5D on the Tekno, I think your estimated top speed is a little high.
Differential Ratio: 4.3
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 48
Pinion Tooth Count: 13
Total Voltage: 14.8
Motor KV: 2700
Tire Diameter (inches): 5.8
Tire Ballooning (inches): .2
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor coil Ω: 0.004
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 3.69 : 1
Total Ratio: 15.87692 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 19.48 inches (494.74 mm)
Total Motor Speed: 39960 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 46.42 mph (74.57 km/h)
Estimated Adjusted Speed: 44 mph (70 km/h) - 6% loss
Effective KV Value: 2700
KT constant: 0.5 oz-in/A
Motor Torque: Amperage not specified...
Final Torque: Amperage not specified...
Final Power: Amperage not specified...

That's what I got when I put it in the calculator. Also, you can get the 50T spur gear that Losi makes, that will also lower the top speed a bit.

But if you are looking to get a different motor to run on 4s don't get the 2.5D, that will be too slow. The 1Y or the 2D will work better, but you'll prolly have to go to a 14t bell with the 2D.

Also, only Revo type bells work with the Tekno kit.

I beg to differ with that statement! A 1515 2.5d actually gears up pretty nice on 4s. Running one on my E-REVO with 25t pinion and any spur from 54-68. I would say to ditch the electric clutch deal, get a RCM mount and use a 5mm MOD1 pinion.

I run the 2.5d in my erevo racer as well.. it's very nice. I do beg to differ though there is no way you can fit that 25t pinion and 68t spur :P I had to cut out a ton of material just to make a 26t/58t fit no way no how any larger spur would fit on there w/ the 26t. W/O cutting away 58t is prob the biggest you can fit w/ the 25t pinion, if you removed some material you may squeeze the 62t on but I really doubt it. With a 25t pinion on the erevo you true options are 54, 56, 58. I will say pushing it with these larger pinions does keep the temps pretty high, I would love to run a 5s config but it would throw off the weight and it's just not worth the $$$'s for the lipo's. You can get great 2s 30c packs for just over $100 now (polyquest etc) hard shell and all. Expect reduced prices as makers such as Losi dump their offerings to the masses as well.

Back on the 8ight-e Truggy... the electri-clutch is awesome and really gives you some nice control on the track, if you bash the pinion direct drive is great but if you race the clutch is sweet. I already have the electri-clutch in my 8ight-e buggy and I've run it both nitro and direct.. again the clutch is best.

Id take the pinion over going back to nitro though ;P LOL

To each their own but I tried the elektriclutch as well and direct drive is much better. The clutch acts somewhat like a slipper and reduce the current draw from your motor but eliminates most of the other advantages of an electric system (brakes & instant power). I'm also not really a fan of metal to metal pinion and spur. Metal to metal is fine in a sealed static transmission but not good where chassis flex is involved.

You'd be served well using between a 16-18T pinion and 51T spur.

I sold my 8ight-e a while ago but I still have an aluminum spur adapter for the 8ight that fits the ofna 51t plastic spur.

PM me if your interested.

Yeah, going with a 50T spur and a 12T pinion would bring the speed down to a more reasonable 40ish mph. Not sure if 12T is an available tooth count for the clutch setup, but, you can always use an actual pinion instead.

Also, a little bit smaller tires can make a difference.

Stum,

My LOSI running the following:

18/44
5S FP 5000mah
Mega 22/30/1 3500kv

All day long, 57mph max on radar. You will not hit 50's with your planned setup. You should be fine!!
