Outrunner General Info

I was thinking that it would be great to have a forum section just for outrunner info, maybe even get it made into a Sticky section. This section would contain explainations as to how outrunners work, links to places u can buy good ones, mounting techniques, how to use them in direct drive setups, and pics of projects that use them. This would be good for me and others who know almost nothing about them.

Google will explain the 'how', or most retailers will have some info too- try JRH's website as he is a key source in that department.

Where is taken care of by simply looking around- most aero websites sell outrunners, as does JRH again, and google is your friend once again.

Mounting is simple- L shaped bracket (a little common snese ansd iniative goes along way, as does a vice and hacksaw).

How to use them- very tricky, you have to get it right first time as typcially cant adjust the gearing, you have to know exactly what voltage you will use and factor that in with the kv rating to arrive at a desired speed.

The search button will yield the projects that use them- its called research, its how you explore the forum and disciver amazing things (as opposed to just expecting poeple to list everything you want to see and know).

it would be very nice to have it all spoon fed to one's self, without having to do any research or figuring things out for one's self, but the long and short of it is- if you dont know how, then research the answer (Linc and Sike are the outrunner dudes, do a search of their threads and that will turn up a wealth of info).

Gee thanks Neil, i hear your strong opinion, but it isn't particular helpful for those who r looking for "useful" info. The section would be great for those of us that don't have time to sit on their ass and look all over the place for info.

What do you mean, Im always in a mood (one word: females).

Anyway, for.... $50, I'll assemble a list of every outrunner build and piece of useful info you could possibly want (though in order to find it I will be using google, the search feature, and good old fashioned detective work, hint hint).

Generally speaking though, outrunner builds are more of a curiosity- saves abit of weight, gains you a bit of power, quieten downs the drive train noise, but also adds a certain degree of complexity that cant just be taught or explained; you learn as you go along, so it isnt as simple as copying a normal conversion or building a normal inrunner setup.

I wouldn't mind a "master pile" of outrunner information either. I find myself constantly researching and checking out new motors when they come out.

I guess I'm looking for that brand new configuration with the mysterious pole count and wind that's going to do what no other motor has ever done!

I remember about a year ago, someone posted a link to a MASTER list of motor information.

My old computer went down to a lightning strike power surge. I'm pretty sure I had it saved on there.

Does anyone remember/know where this is?

It had ALL kinds of motors on it, their sizes, kv's, specs, etc.... on it

I think I remember the list you are talking about- god knows where that was posted to exactly though, but its floating around here somewhere in a thread.

I didnt mean to belittle yours or anyone else outrunner prpjects though with the 'curiosity' comment, I just ment that they are very 'one-off' setups at the moment and far from the norm, plus they arent simpler or cheaper to do than a normal setup, due to the gearing/voltage/kv/motor mount issues etc etc. I think its that extra completixity that makes them more fun build to watch, and learn from, but without a specific plan or idea of what a user wants to achieve with a setup like that, it doesnt help much to simply rattle off a list of other builds...

what neil is saying is %100 percent correct, albeit with a little attitude, but as he says, there is a woman involved. nuff said. Anyway.... an outruner setup lacks the adjustibility of gearing and therefore has to be a very specific and thought out build. its not for noobs, and research is neccasary. The main tool you need is the speed calculator http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2259 and then it's matching kv with voltage and desired speed. the search feature was included for this reason

I to am thinking outrunner for my next project, or multiple projects. I have been thinking cyclon 2000 for my MT/truggy needs and the 4000 for my 1/10 ST, I know there are others out but not for cars and, what would be good. I think an Outrunner section would be a great addition to the database of the monster
