Lastest on MM with Novak motors?/3S with Novak motor? - 01.05.2009, 12:57 PM

I was reading some posts a few years ago about some cogging issues with a MM running Novak motors. Is this still true with the latest firmware upgrades that came out?

Other than that, any issues you guys can think of with my plan of using some Novak 540 motors on 3S with a MM I should be aware of? Thanks!

novak motors (all but the HV series) will go boom on 3s. Id even be afraid to run 2s on mine with the experience i had (rotor melted to the can, pede 38 to 0 in .004 seconds, and a not fun sound/spark)

I read other had some success also. I still had some starting (cogging) issues the last time I tried my HV4.5 motor and the MM. It was a while ago but it was after the firmware that did make a hue improvement in how they ran together. I haven't tried it as of late though. Since then I have tried the Tekno Clutch out on the Slayer and feel if I used it with the MM and HV4.5. It would give the motor the chance to get going first. Getting it rolling from a dead stop was the only time it had problems. Once it has a little movement to get it going it ran really great. Seemed to run better then with the original HV ESC and a little longer run time. Just couldn't handle the start problem so gave up on it.

Huh? I've been running the 8.5 for about 3 months now with no issues.I run it in a Rustler with the VXL,on 3s,Geared 18/87 with mashers it does about 50.But what makes it good is that it seems to run much cooler then the VXL motor. The important thing is to make sure it has the sintered rotor and keep it under 70000 rpm's going by there ratings.

Yeah, those bonded rotor motors arent the best. Novak EX 10.5/bonded, fresh from warranty service (last one fell apart)...installed in a car with not good airflow around the motor but geared per Novak rec's. Motor thermal'ed through the overheat protection these things have (wasnt too suprised). Little bugger cogs whacking the throttle open now probably due to a bit of demag, so its in the junkpile now. That ESC runs other motors perfectly still.

The Novak sintered stuff is pretty nice, 8.5, 5.5, and 3.5 (110 amp fireball, lol) are good. My 8.5 on 3S geared up a bit should be nice in my currently 2S/3.5 powered speed buggy.

Keep the reports coming guys...I like being absolutely sure of things before I buy a MM and a 3S battery.

whoaaa, r u saying i could be using my SS esc and LRP 8.5t motor on 3s?!?! I don't think they'd fair to well in a DST, but the LRP and ESC are specced to 7.4v (nominal) max...

Not at all. You misread the thread. For reference, MM = Castle Creations Mamba Max esc and is rated for 3s.

An 8.5 on 3s is no worse than even a 5.5 on 2s as the rpms will be similar. Actually you could probably get away with running an 8.5 on 4s as rpm will still only be comparable to that of the 3.5 on 2s. Look at the kv charts on novak's site.

Yeah, 8.5 on 3S will need higher gears compared to 3.5 on 2S for sure, 7 teeth or so on my buggy for the same speed. 4S...battery's too big.

But all a moot point now, I changed my mind again. I'm gonna keep my 8.5 in my DF03RA/TA02/Humvee scaler hybrid, pretty ideal for that ride, the 5.5 and 3.5 are going to touring car duties for that frankenstein machine that sprang up from a pile of spare parts. Funny thing, pricey GTB esc in a junkpile car, lol. Oh well, that thing shouldnt be that bad once it comes together as planned.

New plan...

Medusa 50mm V2 motor, MM, and looks like a Hyperion 4500vz 3s battery will tuck in with just some minor fitting to this buggy and have no strange bulges. Should be interesting how the torque and amp draw looks going to 3S with a 4 pole motor.
