Best way to non permanently lock a diff - 01.12.2009, 09:55 AM

I need to lock the center and possibly rear diff for my tracked crt.5...

I really really really really really really really really really don't want to buy new diff's once I'm done - i.e. don't want to use glue...

What are the alternatives? Plasticine? modelling clay? Playdough...

I'm sure playdough would work pretty good. Once it's in there the worst that'll happen is it dries up. Once it dries up it'd come out real easy.

I've seen a diff lock mechanism around somewhere that simply replaces the inner spider gears and locks it. IIRC, it was for a savage. Couldn't something similar be machined for the common diffs (Mike?). Using really thick stuff is possible, but is a PITA to clean out if you decide the change it.

maximizer r/c made a few. ofna makes a spool for gtp center diffs, i deduce it would work with any 1/8 scale diff. Mike needs a few more mills and an asian country to keep up with our wants

Silly putty. I have used it in several projects. It effectively locks the diffs and wen you want them to be diff like again you simply pull it out and put oil back in.

I meant something like this:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSXS7&P=7

It basically replaces all the inner spider gears. The outdrive pins are sit in the groove and the locking "case" engages where the cross pins would normally go.

that's what maximizer r/c made. you glossed over my first answer and focused on the second!

Hmm, very intersting. I like the cen piece as it is 6 bucks vs maxmizer's highway robbery... But it is ano-d red and that must add at least 5000000psi to the tensile strength....

Lol, I guess so. I just assumed that since you mentioned the GTP single speed part, that the other thing was similar.
