Gearing Question - 1/8 Buggy - 02.01.2009, 04:41 PM

Hey guys,

My buggy conversion is finally almost finished and am now thinking about gearing since I know what all of the components I will be running. Here is what it is looking like:

XTM X-Terminator 1/8 scale buggy
Castle MMM Combo with the 2200kv Motor
Zippy 5 cell 5000mAh

I currently have a 13t pinion that I was going to use but not sure what a reasonable spur gear size would be. Just dont want to run something that is going to fry the nice new motor or esc. I would apprecaite the input! Thanks.

Running the numbers through BrianG's speed calculator:
http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_top_speed.html
A 13t pinion should be perfect assuming a 46t spur, achieving ~45mph top speed.

5S with a 2200 kv motor is a bit high on max rpm for the best efficiency, but you wont be lacking in speed. I run a 13T with a 2000kv motor on 4S and its pretty fast at the track with my Losi 8B. If you are bashing I think you will be fine, but at a race you may have heat issues with the motor and/or esc. If you want lower temps I think you will need an 11T depending on your spur and diff gear ratios.

I have the 2650 in my 8ight. I didn't have my temp gun w/ me but after a full run doing wide open speed passes on a 5s 3900mAh pack I was able to hold my hand on the motor without pain indefinately. Gearing was 12/46.

The 2200 should run very cool on 5s, but like everyone has said, it will be too much for racing and better for bashing.

Yeah, im more going for just bashing and casual driving out in the parking lot etc, not so much racing around a track. So it sounds like I may want to drop a tooth or two on the pinion to keep safe temps (atleast with a 46 tooth spur)? I forget what the stock spur is on the X-terminator, and I sent the whole center bulk and spur assembly to mike so he can make me a mount. Ill have to check it out once Mike sends it all back to me.
Id rather be safe than sorry here which is why I asked.
