MMM, Fan, Temps? -
02.19.2009, 04:01 AM
Everything I've read states that the fan should be coming on at about 150 degrees. From what I can tell, my fan comes on somewhere between 75-85 degrees. Based on what I've read, I'm assuming that the, "Is this normal?" question would be answered as a no. My concern is more geared toward is this a problem?
My current gearing is 19/68 (stock), but I have a 20 and a 22 Pinion coming in tomorrow and a 58 spur I'm waiting to install. I don't want to have any over-gearing issues. (Running Zippys, 6S, 20-30c, 5000mah).
Thoughts?

Mine comes on at <100 degrees. IMO, the fan switching on at a lower temperature isn't an issue. Also, with F/Q 1.20 the thermal cut out has been improved and the ESC will not arm till the temps have dropped to a safe level. Are you asking a question about over gearing?

Really there are multiple questions.
1. Fan comes on earlier than 150 degrees, is this okay?
-Will I see a short life on my ESC due to the fan constantly running?
2. If this is happening at such a low gearing ratio, will I be creating problems by gearing up?
3. Since I'm here asking questions, what should the motor temps be? I'm at 120 degrees right now. Again, with gearing up, will I be creating issues with over-temp?
Thanks.

-Will I see a short life on my ESC due to the fan constantly running? No, electronics like it when things are cool. It's not like a car where an ideal operating temperature is required. With electronics, the colder it is, the better they perform.
2. If this is happening at such a low gearing ratio, will I be creating problems by gearing up? This is a void issue if you're confident that the fan is triggered at a lower temperature as opposed to the ESC heating up quicker.
3. Since I'm here asking questions, what should the motor temps be? I'm at 120 degrees right now. Again, with gearing up, will I be creating issues with over-temp? This is always a trial and error thing as there are several factors coming into play. I use 22/58 gearing on 6S in my E-Revo, and the motor has the novak 5412 heatsink with two highspeed cooling fans mounted on it. Couple that with 15 degrees of advanced timing and my temps are never more than 140F.
Thanks.

try updating the firmware and that should get the fan comming on at a later time as mentioned above.

I'll give it a shot. Sounds like I should just shut up and drive...! With over a grand into this Revo, the LAST thing I want to do, is assume something is okay. Afterall, everytime I buy a car or a motor, I need to get the wife one of them fancy (POS) Coach purses. Talk about wasting money!!! Thanks again everyone.

It'll never all be OK till your drive it more and more to iron out any setup flaws :)
about the temp the fan comes on, don't worry about that. when you measure the temp it comes on, you're measing the end of some heatsink fins, I think the esc is getting the temp from much coser to the source = hotter.
