Really cool transmission - no fixed gears - 04.25.2009, 08:40 PM

I found something called the NuVinci transmission. It works similarly to a ball diff. Instead of one ball, there are three and as the hub spins faster, the cintrifucal force adjust the gearing, and it gets taller...

Any chance something like this will ever be made for rc use? Looks really efficient...

Neat idea, just not sure how well it would work in our applications. In the 1:1 world, CVDs are usually limited in how much torque they can take. Great for fuel-sippers though. In the R/C world, most of us have very high powered setups. I think any CVD designed to handle the torque of BL would also be quite heavy.

That's true. I wonder how EV's could adapt this though...

im failing to see how that design works...from the animation...seems to me like the ball stays in the same position ....jus tilts it..

Built a dual cone CVT, and althought cool, decided to dump it for a 2speed transmission for my application. Like BrianG said, cant handle the torque.

The design i like is the variable pully style CVT/s

One design iv drawn out but not built is a bit different. This setup has half sphere wheels and the wheel contact changes to increase or decrease radius thus changing the final drive ratio.

I am familiar with that design. I'm not sure it would work well with BL tech because of the torque it would be subjected to. At least, a version small enough to use in an RC couldn't handle it.*

*Just like BrianG said. I should really read everything before I post!
