R/C School Project - 05.10.2009, 09:50 PM

So what can be better than getting to bring your RC into school and running it through the halls? How bout being graded for it! It is a chemistry project, and I just happened to choose brushless R/C because of the chemestry of LiPo batteries. here is what I have to do… any suggestions and ideas? Also, it says one of my sources has to be a non-internet source. Is there anybody out there who is up for an interview about Lipos(who knows a thing or 2 about them)?

Quote:
Chemistry-272 Toy Project

Overview: Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. In this project you will investigate the properties and applications of a toy that uses chemistry or principles of chemistry in some way. You will then prepare a 2 to 3 page paper, and a well designed 4 to 8 page PowerPoint presentation. Finally, a 2 to 4 minute presentation will be made to the class. Extra points will be awarded for bringing in the actual toy as a demonstration.

Requirements for Written Report: The report shall be 2 to 3 double spaced pages. Use one inch margins and a 12 point font. In addition to the 2 to 3 pages of text, it is to have a title page, and a bibliography (Use Noodle-Tools). You must have a minimum of two resources, one of which must be a non-Internet resource. The grading rubric is attached. The written report must also be submitted to Turnitin.com. A password will be provided in class.

After choosing a toy, investigate its properties, chemical elements or compounds it contains, how it works, chemicals reactions that may occur or chemistry principals it employs, and any hazards and safety precautions. If your toy involves a chemical reaction(s), you should try to include the balanced chemical equation for at least one of the reactions that occur and identify the type of reaction that occurs. (synthesis, decomposition, combustion, etc.). If your toy operates using a principle of chemistry, such as the gas laws, density, electron transfer, etc., include the formula (eg. D=m/v), and a sample calculation.

Also include the trade name, manufacturer of the toy, any history of its development or use in other applications, and where it can be purchased if it’s still in production. I understand that sometimes the manufacturer will not release all ingredients or secrets but try to gather as much information as possible.

Requirements for PowerPoint Presentation: The PowerPoint presentation is to be an overview of ideas to be presented. It should be 4 to 8 pages in length. Follow the guidelines for making a good PowerPoint presentation. The grading rubric is attached

Requirements for Oral Presentation: Whenever information must be presented to a group of people, the presenter is in effect a performer. Visual aids are very effective in enhancing the quality of a presentation. You are to use your PowerPoint to guide your presentation. However, other resources may also be used, such as overheads and posters. Keep your presentation simple, clear, concise and to the point. The presentation is to be 2 to 4 minutes in length. The grading rubric is attached.

Due Dates and Timeline: The bullets below explain the grading criteria.
• Friday May 8, 2009: Introduction to research paper.
• Friday May 15, 2009: Toy assigned/chosen. Must not be the same as someone in your class.
• Monday, June 8, 2009: Written report due at start of class. Five points will be deducted for each day the written report is late. Report must be submitted to Turnitin.com.
• Monday, June 8, 2009: PowerPoint presentation must be saved in the
proper folder on the x-drive before the end of the school day. The title of your project should be the last four digits of your student ID. Five points will be deducted for each day the presentation is late.
• Monday, June 8, 2009: Order of presentations determined.
• Tuesday, June 9, 2009: Start presentations to class.
