8ight-t center diff SUN GEAR - 06.17.2009, 10:50 PM

I have just taken apart my Center diff and was cleaning and going to change the oil when i was inspecting each gear for wear, i found that one of the SUN GEARS has a small chip on one of the ribs. Its very small, and i dont see it really being an issue, but i am new to this so i could be wrong. like i said its like a little chip of metal is missing. so very small. thoughts suggestions?

AH! here we go, i was messing with the camera and was able to get these great pics! Im def going to replace, i didnt know my camera could take these good pics. Looking at these gear close up u can really see the poor quality, lots of divits and pock marks, these are the stock 8ight-t 1.0 gears. Who makes better replacements?

I would replace the gears, but also check the diff cup and other parts (may be the cause of chipped gears). I don't like when stuff breaks, I always replace questionable parts at any tear down.

dont see the signifigance of it. i dont think anyone makes higher quality gears, it was probably a one time thing, get stock replacements.

I can see damage and/or wear to a few teeth, I'd be replacing the gear set...no fun if it were to fail again

I think the sportwerks gears are better quality and they are the same. You may want to use shims on the spider gears if there is any slop, I don't think they have them in the 8ight (sportwerks do).

Replace the set, If you put it back together with no new gear or just the replace the bad gear who's to say another old gear will not fail next run ? Diffs are to much of a pain in the ass to take chances.
2cents. BTW, Great Pics.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

Hold the cup and one outdrive in one hand (don't allow it to move), and try to rotate the other outdrive back and forth with other hand. If it moves back and forth more than a tiny bit, it needs the shims.
