MMM - Can someone please clear this up! - 06.28.2009, 02:35 AM

Ok guys I have the Savage Flux which runs the MMM V3 ESC, to date it's around 100 runs old on 4s and has worked fine.

I was of the understanding that if I wanted to go 6s I'd need packs capable of 150 Amps constant to adequately deal with ripple current etc etc

So I was fine with that.

But then the latest HPI Flux video shows up on Youtube

They're running LRP 3600 28C packs - 90 Amps constant.

Now from what I had been led to believe this is dangerously low Amp wise for the Flux.

So which is it?

I am intending to run Polyquest packs on 6s.

Any help?

what you saw in that HPI vid sounds like a recipi for desaster.
sure it's possible, heck i'd run 10C lipo's safely....BUT to do it you are talking very low load driving.
no hard throttle/brake mashing, no high speed runs, slow acceleration. and even then you still run a risk.

so basicly...the more you spend on the lipo's the better, if you can afford, get some NEU or Enerland lipo's cause then you can kain the heck out of the flux and not have to worry about the MMM having ripple current etc.

as an extra mesure i found out that our LHS is getting a shipement of savage fluxes, so i offered to print up a extra set of instructions regarding how not the blow up your monster.
lets hope the guy isnt too arrogant to accept my advice.

The ammo tin full of Polyquest will look after you, gear correctly & no pumping the throttle like an oil burner and all will be well

Here's the youtube video in question:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ks5LN0xcss

But for me, if I do go to 6s it'll be with DECENT Polyquest / Enerland packs, capable of 150A constant and if I do retain the 20t pinion it'll be on smaller tyres such as HPI Nubz.

They're quoting a "130km/h" top speed and using 3600mah 28C (90A constant) packs

i reckon it's possible if you BABY up the throttle and have good quality lipo's that dont drop their voltage much at all!

still not a good idea

It's not about voltage drop but the increase in voltage under braking, which can go above the limit for a few milliseconds. Or else we would all be toast when our packs die, because voltage drop is way more then.

get at least 5000ma packs with 30-35C ratings. you want headroom. the larger the peak capability of the battery the better even if you dont use it.

Agreed, but why would HPI blatently use such low amp rated packs? Isn't it just asking for problems?

....and why has Castle Creations not made any comment on this?

Really depends on the quality of the cells used. If you have high quality cells, they can handle the stress more so than cheaper cells.

If you are using generic type cells or any of the maxamps variety, I think 125+ continuous ratings are a must. However higher quality cells like enerland you can easliy get by with 90-100 amp continuous. The ratings are truer and the cells hold voltage better under load. Most of the time the high end cells are underrated.

A good indication of the health of the cell is what temps you are reading after spending 5 or more minutes running. If temps are more than 20 degrees above ambient, the cells are probably being stressed too hard. In 95-100 degree weather I never see my flightpowers above 110.
