Recommendations for MM 8ight buggy setup. - 08.04.2009, 08:22 AM

This is the mamba max that I'm talking about. Not the MMM just to clarify that so it's not confusing for anyone.

I am going to be running an 8ight buggy as the title states with a tekno conversion, and wanting to use a mamba max speed controller. I've got a MMM but it's out of commission right now. My question is what would I need to do to make the MM run cooler? I had one before on my traxxas rustler, and it always seemed to get pretty hot but never thermaled. I want to run the buggy on a 3s and one of the ccneu motors. So for this speed control and lipo setup which would be the best motor? the 2650 or the 2200? I'm looking for a good compromise between heat, and runtime. The longest main I would be in would probably be 15-20 minutes.

As for running the ESC cooler, can I just replace the caps that are on the board with new ones or do I just put the cap on the power cable like I've been reading? One of the caps on the MM board is crushed right now so I'm already going to to be soldering a new cap on, if it would help just to get different ones then I'd rather just go ahead and do that while I'm working in that area. I guess I'll be getting a fan too. Probably scavenge the fan from my sick MMM for the time being.

I don't know what exact gearing I will be using right now but I will want to gear for around 30-35 mph.

Thanks in advance you guts for info you can provide.

I'd up the voltage to 4s with around a 6k for that size main (it will be heavy though) - look for a 1512 motor around 2k.

The MM will need a BEC for cool operation, extra external Low ESR cap and fan.

I wouldn't solder to the board...

+1

A bigger external, low ESR cap rated for 25V or higher, an external BEC, and a I would suggest a ~30mm fan screwed into the heatsink. Can't wait for the MM Pro, but I suppose that's anyones guess when that's going to be officially released.

Yeah I'm pretty much set on going with 3s. I've had real good succes with 3s in a truggy in the past.

Also why wouldn't you solder to the board? I've been certified in JSTD-001 soldering so if it's a technical issue I don't think I would have a problem there.

thanks for the input on the cap.

Hey I just got done setting my 8ight-B up with a MM and I used a Castle Neu 2650kv. I used 4s and was doing laps around a little bash track and it was pretty fast for the small track. I then used a 3s and it was still a decent speed for the small track.

I'd say if your track isnt that large 3s will run just fine for 30-35 mph. I had it geared for 33mph on 3s and 44mph on 4s. The 2650kv castle motor only got up to 112* F but the MM was a Toasty 160* F. Gearing was 14/48.

I plan on adding a cap and MAYBE a fan, but it was really hot outside and I think the cap may suffice...

Soldering on the board voids the warranty.

When I had my MM, it would heat up quick even with an external BEC and 2 fans on it (a 90mm and a 40mm). The only thing I didn't try was the additional caps so I hope that's the answer to the heat issues. I was running off 3s and 12nimh too. I ended up sellingthe MM cuz I just couldn't keep it cool. On 3s I'd go with the 2650kv. Good luck.

The 2650 is a amp hog though. Someone in the buggy section did eagletree data that showed the 2650 versus the 1515 1.5D and the 1.5D actually had less amp draw, ran cooler and was not near as picky on gearing.

Thanks for the thread Jose, that helped make my mind up a little more.

Think I'll replace the stock caps on the mm with some 35v caps and add the power lead cap as well. Then borrow the velineon fan that's in my MMM. Next will be off for sometesting.
