Off-topic: Look at this turtle! - 08.07.2009, 11:02 PM

Wasn't sure if this is against the rules to post off-topic stuff here, but I wanted to show everyone this.

I found this little guy in my driveway when I got home from work one evening. I think it's just unbelievable. Never have I seen a turtle that small. Bondonutz says it's a four-lined musk turtle and that they only get a few inches even when full grown. Snapped a few pics then sent him on his way. Wouldn't have made much soup anyway!

We had some turtles as pets a few years back. I made an enclosure, approximately 4X8, out of chicken wire. Then I got a small plastic kiddie pool at Wal-Mart and sunk it in the ground. It was maybe 8 - 10 inches deep and 4 feet in diameter. Worked real well. We fed them worms and grubs and once in a while feeder gold fish. When it started to get cold in the fall we just let them go in the river here in town where we live.

Yes he does pose quite well!

He doesn't seem very afraid of anything.

Sometimes when fishing in the spring, I will see a few of the year's early hatch out swimming around.

My wife scooped one up and named him speedie. She had a really good time playing around with him.

I had a turtle when I was in high school, man do they stink! They are cool but not very playful. I love the idea of an outdoor enclosure with catch and release, but that wouldn't work so good up here.....

We go off topic all the time around here.

That is the cutest fricken' turtle I have ever seen. Thanks for the share.

In captivity they rely on you to change the water periodically, considering they have to swim in their own shit. Eating their natural forage creates a lot of amonia. Even a diet of Reptomin "formulated turtle chow" will still foul the water fairly quickly without some sort of filtration or H2O changes.
I used to breed turtles when I was kid, No the offspring didn't look like me ? I had a regular farm, I raised them and sold them to various pet stores and even shipped them across state.
