Tekin for a Summit

I'm going to get a RX8 for my Summit. I have a tall order of what I want it to do. I have other specialty RC cars, and now I'm trying to make a good all-around vehicle. I want the Summit to be equally good (not great) at crawling, mud-bogging, bashing, and going to the track. It will likely be geared for 30-35 mph. What system would be the best for this type of driving?

TT2360 4038 2250kv - Wye - 1Y
TT2361 4038 2000kv - Delta - 2D
TT2362 4038 1700kv - Delta - 2.5D
TT2363 4038 1550kv - Wye - 1.5Y
TT2364 4038 1350kv - Delta - 3D

My guess is to use a 2000kv on 4s. Would a 1550kv on 6s be too much power for crawling? I like to do really slow crawling.

Hmm, honestly, I feel the stock system is one of the best for crawling, but the speed isn't there...

You could easily do the 2000 or 1700 system on 4s and get 30-35mph. Then test out the sensored running with low speed crawling.

The 1550 on 6s would be another great choices. Do you really want the added weight of the 6s for running at the track, not really but the added weight could help tremendously on crawling and mud-bogging. This combo would have some serious power and efficiency as well!

Side note here: The RX8 esc is not waterproof, so I'm not sure I would hit the mud-bog...

BTW: There are some videos or a MMM 2200 combo trying to crawl and its just down right ugly... I hope the Tekin can accomplish this better.


My Summit is still running the stock EVX2 with a OSE 700sc motor(basically a Titan 775). I had to adjust from flying around at 40+ in all my previous vehicle. But I overcame it and I'm happy with the 20mph and the variability of the Summit!

Here's some videos of my Summit with a MMM installed. I've done lots of experimentation and have made it a much better crawler, but I just can't get it where I want. That's why I'm thinking Tekin.

I talked to the president of Tekin today. I think I have a waterproofing solution and he agreed it should work. I'll work on that once I get a brushless system working. I may just end up going with a Kershaw dual 700 kit, so I'll worry about the waterproofing later.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. Is it better to say I came here via the Traxxas forum or the Nambla forum? I'm not sure which is considered worse around here.

I guess my question is what is the difference between a 2000kv, 1700kv, and 1550kv if any of them is run on 4s and geared for 35mph? The only difference I can see is that a higher kv motor will have more inertia and be slower revving, but I doubt that little amount of motor inertia compares to the inertia of everything else.

So you're saying the Traxxas forum is like the short bus edition of NAMBLA....


Anyways, 35mph isn't really demand of any of those systems as long as 4s is used. You will need different gearings. The only thing the 1550 will offer vs the 2000 is the ability to run 6s for added efficiency as well as extra weight of batteries.

For crawling, I think it's best to maximize the rpm/mph ratio. Basically, I want as many rpm's as possible when crawling at 0.5mph. That's my theory anyway. Going with that, I can do 2250-4s or 1550-6s and get the same max rpm's of about 33,000 at 3.7V. Either system would work good enough. The efficiency of 6s isn't as important as the convenience of 4s since I run 4s in everything else. I think I'll get the 2250 and gear 14/58 with stock tires.

If your only after 4s and want to save a little cash the MM Pro will be out in a few weeks. CC uses a water proof coating on all of their boards which is a good start. The controller is capable of sensored or sensorless and is a damn site cheaper than the tekin. I believe that only running at 30-35 you won't be stressing the amp load either. I would go with around a 2000kv motor for this.

I've heard about this MM Pro, but I can't find any info about it. Is it 1/10 or 1/8? Does it come in a kit with a sensored motor? What's the price?

I have put my MMM's through quite the water torture test and they also come out fine. I've opened up the case and found sand, mud, and water, but they always keep running. Once the case is opened, I rinse everything off, blow it dry, reassemble, and it works instantly.


EDIT - I called CC. The MM Pro is 1/10 scale only. They don't have any immediate plans for a 1/8 sensored ESC.

The MM Pro will work fine in 8th scale in your application. The MM was 10th scale and used all day long in 8th scale applications on 4s and 5s. it's the amp draw you have to worry about anyway. Check out the CC forums here, there is a whole thread on the MM Pro.

I definitely think your Max RPM to speed theory is a great one in reducing possibly cogging or overheating from low speed operations. Certainly has the thought behind it. In addition to this gearing will help lower the mph while keeping the RPM's up.

If you're sticking to 4s, I see no reason why the 2250 or 2000kv models won't work. They are both great and plenty strong enough for 35mph. Not too mention that you do have a super low 1st gear int he Summit as well.
