God I hate life sometimes... -
12.30.2009, 01:37 AM
My poor sister and brother in law are in just in utter shock and sadness today and I feel sick to my stomache. They picked up a stray kitten abpit two months ago that was thrown in a local dumpster to die when my sisters friend heard a meowing and found the 2 week old kitten and brought it to the vet where my sister works. She fell in love with it and brought it home with two large retriever dogs who instantly bonded and loved the kitten they named Marty. They even sent friends and family a Christmas card photo with Marty in the picture along with the dogs, the perfect happy family for the holidays.
Today the unthinkable happened, Marty the kitten got bitten in half by their retriever when he came too close to the food bowl and killed him instantly. The retriever was a stray and had been abused when she was a puppy so she instinctevly guarded her food bowl at all times and didn't even realize what she did until it was to late. Needless to say, my brother in law came home to a very grim scene indeed, the whole family is just devestated and my sister is an absolute wreck.....

ive seen my grandfathers huge dog grab up one of the neighbors little rat bastard annoying dogs that i hate with a passion and kill it instantly and it was not a cool thing to see.
That kinda stuff does happen with animals though, not much you can do to prevent wierd things like that.

I've lost a couple of family members to cancer recently so after reading the thread title I was expecting something different. I'm soory to say I found your story a tad amusing.
I don't dislike cats but they are a PITA to local fauna. It wouldn't be so bad if they ate everything they killed but that only makes up 10%, they kill for fun.
As stated things like that happen sometimes. My sister used to have a rotweiler, good natured dog but my sister never left it alone with ANYONE. Thank god nothing did ever happen.

I'm sorry to hear that man. It's a shitty situation. But if your sister knew she had a dog that was protective of his food and she left it alone with a kitten she was asking for trouble. This wasn't a freak occurence, rather just what happens with animals. Even humane societies check if a dog has guarding behavior, and if they do they don't adopt them out. These are the things that happen when animal lovers think with their heart instead of their head.

Well, that's a shitty situation.
Whether the dog is a rescue or not, guarding his food like that is unacceptable and personally it would already be "dealt with". That sounds cruel, but I am an animal lover(like as in, hates watching seals die on discovery haha). What would happen if you have a newborn that was crawling around the floor, and went to "pet puppy" as he was eating. Would the dog snap and bit the child in the face?

My family had a experience just like that......
When my Brother and Sister in law got married two things happened....she got pregnant and they bought two basset hounds, one male one female.(had them both clipped too)
The female basset named Abby grew very close to my sister in law in the months that she was pregnant, and when the baby popped out(though I don't quite remember her saying it was that easy...) Abby and the Spencer liked the baby and every thing was peachy......until, Abby realize she wasn't getting all the attention she started to become a real bitch. But since both our families are dog lovers, they didn't think any thing of it "dogs can be jealous she'll get over it" Need less to say, the problem didn't get any better.....Then one day the family was having lunch and as you guys know, baby's make a lot of mess, and with the clean up crew still in full swing My niece got down to go play.........A few barks a babies cry and short scuffle later Abby had my nieces head in her mouth.... All of it
Ever see a Dog fly? I have, right threw the kitchen and out the door. My niece was unharmed but the next day they got rid of the dog. They gave it to my in laws brother. And who says Dogs don't hold grudges? Years later He brought the dog with him on a visit, that didn't go over well nothing happened but that dog had a grudge. So she's never allowed to return again.
And as for the Spencer? well lets just say he's still the families favorite

Sorry for your loss.
It drives me nuts when movies have humans put lives at stake to go back for the family pet. Come on, it's Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection.
On the dogs behalf: Did this kitty(R.I.P.)see some signs before of this dogs bad eating habits? I know not to trust human eating predators.

sorry to hear but thats nature at its best you do have to remember dogs were once a wild animal.. and their instincts do tend to take over once ina while.. of course this probably could have been cured with a good whippin.. i had my rottweiler snap at me once when i reached for her food bowl.. a couple of minutes with me in her pin she never growled at me again.. she knew who the boss was..

We have two dogs and a cat and have come home to some interesting scenes. Both dogs are strays from shelters, and the cat was owned by an old lady who couldn't care for it when she got older.
Needless to say, we got a the stray retriever 3rd of the bunch. We had to go to the store once right after we got him home and the cat was out. Gone for 20mins, came home and had over turned lamps, plants and blood sprayed on the wall. The retriever had gone after the cat, backed him into the corner, and proceeded to get his nose shredded by a pissed off cat w/ long claws. It was his blood thank god, cat was fine, and now they are friends (not that they have forgotten, dog is still scared of the cat, and the cat reminds him and harasses him 6 yrs later.)
Another time we came home to knocked over plants, lamps, things of shelves, a broken blind, a dead bird on the landing upstairs and several guilty looking pets. It was winter time, doors and windows shut and the cat had not been out in several days. I can only imagine wth was going on while we were gone. You never know with pets.
Anyway, sorry for the loss. At least the cat a had a better home and an a quicker death than had she never been found, even if it was just for a short while.

Tragic, but animals act on instinct, they tend not to think through the consequences of their actions, even if they are sorry afterwards.

Overboard, probably, but you have to think if you have young children playing around, maybe picking up the dog's toys & trying to play with, it may think they're trying to take its toys away = conflict. I wouldnt trust a rehomed animal with little kids, especially if it has a history.
Heck, there have been plenty of young children killed or mauled by family pets recently, even when that pet has been owned since a puppy and raised with the kids- the animals dont know any better, its just nature.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.
