Very Hot Wires on the 1717? or is that normal - 04.19.2010, 02:32 AM

so i got the muggy up and running this weekend and its a monster, I'm only getting about 20min of run time on my 5200mah 30c and the fan is running on the monster non stop so i have some questions

160 seams very hot for motor wires isn't?

the motor and lipo was around 110 if forgot to check the MMM but it didnt thermal so im guessing it was fine on temp. i stopped with 25% remaining in the pack because performance was dropping off and i though i was getting close to LVC.

when i pulled the pack it was alittle soft and i had though it may have puffed but after cooling and recharging it was firm again.

so is 5200mah 30c not enuff?

alittle more info if it helps

the muggy weighs 12.8lbs
it is geared for 50mph (that may be the source of my problems right there)
i am useing an external BEC
nothing is binding, i just went overeverything when i got the muggy from linc and then i went over it all again after i ran it

MMM settings
high start power, timeing is at low,

I would lower the gearing towards 40. 40 is fast when you have something that big and heavy.

What voltage are you running?

Also, what connectors are you using everywhere? Stock 6.5mm on the 1717 I suspect?

I use low start power on the MMM. I don't think this will affect the outcome much but just a suggestion.

yep 6.4mm

I'm running 5cell 18.5v

my next chance to take it out will be wensday, i will change the start power and see if it helps anything, I'm also going to shorten the motor wires about 1 inch, thats about the max i can remove without worrying about them rubbing the rear brace.

most of my running was done in very short mostly dead very dry grass in a park

5S for 50mph and a 12 lbs truck !!!! high top speed = high power
power = amp x volts ====> low voltage = high amps for high power.

You are draining probably way too much amps during acceleration. The motor is big so it dont heat up easily, but your ESC and wires can heat up fast with high current.
==> Try with 6S and gear down. The defaut setting of start power is low, why you put it at high ? Avoid start cogging ? Oups you can't gear down. Buy a 1520 1Y ^^

I had my 1717 in the 130*range this weekend, it did not have any of these symptoms.

TRC 4s 8000 15c (around 35mph) & 6s 4000 35c (around 45mph).12-13lb truck, High start power, 0 punch, 30% brake, 10* of time.

I've have been watching the mmm fan for an idea of esc load. How fast does the fan come on after starting the run? How long does it(fan) take to shut off when resting.

Check your back spacer/washer on your new rotor install(shaft play). Did it fall off the shaft into the motor when installing?(I'm guilty of this one.)

Yeah methinks too,
or how fast did it get to 150*F.

It's a way for me to guestimate load, without trying shoot a surface temp on a plastic box(mmm).

my fan was running after about 2min

im useing 6.5mm bullets for everything

i cant gear down, i have one pinion because they are $31 each at kershaw for 6mm, i havent receved a new 5mm rotor and i looks like it may be months befor castle has more (i got skipped and im not to happy about that) to be honest i will never buy another pinion from dan, this one is showing ware allready and there is no way its hardened.

so i guess its not runable again?

What voltage are you running? If 4s then 50mph is way too much as you know.

I dont quite understand why you say you got skipped- you did see this message I presume:

Quote:
Gents,

I have in my hands a limited number of 1717 rotors with the 5mm shaft. I currently have 6 people on the list. Those 6 gents will be getting e-mails in a few minutes. If you do not receive an e-mail, it means I do not have you on the list. If you need one, please shoot me an e-mail at thomas (at) castle creations (dot) com. Sorry for the delay, but hopefully we have enough right now to cover everyone. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

I believe several guys who had the 6mm rotor originally complained via email & were told to hang-tight, and those were the 6 guys on 'the list' who got notifications & were sent the new 5mm rotors. If you didnt contact Castle after receiving the 6mm rotor by mistake initially or you did but didnt get the notification email, or didnt contact them when that message ( quote ) was posted, then perhaps you should do so before the limited spares are all handed out, otherwise you will end up having to wait months for a new rotor...

i called and got on the list with Christie, there were two lists, hers an Thomas
he didn't know about hers and she didn't know the rotors came in or that he sent them out. i didn't really want to get into the details, they are doing their best to make everything right with us 1717 owners and it was just an over site.

@ Semi Pro, ah, fair enough- women and their 'to-do' lists

Ditto what nuz69 said- 5s, with a 1580kv motor in a 12lb truck, geared for 50mph is too much- little wonder the motor is pulling tonnes of current and heating up the esc and wires really quickly, with poor runtime. 6s and gear for 40-45mph should give much better results.
