Questions Questions Questions Hyper ST - 09.18.2010, 01:28 AM

Hey all i'm new to the forum been into R/C on and off for about 20 years but just recently converted my ST Pro to Brushless.

I see all kinds of threads on the ST Pro here just wonder what the "most common gearing" seems to be.

I am running CC MMM 2200KV and have tried 13T, 14T, 15T, and 17T just wondering what kind of Temps are considered "safe" as I have heard everything from 140 to 200 degrees depending who you ask.

This will be a 4S setup cause I tried 6S with the 17T pinion and literally blew the tires of the front rims.

I guess i'm just trying to find a good starting point and i'll go from there any help greatly appreciated

Broadly speaking, you gear for a certain speed with any given setup- 'best' gearing gives you the speed you want & the temps stay in check; whether thats 40 or 60mph depends on what you desire. If you enter your setup info into BrianG's brilliant calculator it will spit out a pretty accurate speed estimate, just play with your spur/pinion options to get the result you want:

As for temps:

Motor = 180*F maximum, ideally 120-160*F
ESC = about the same^
Lipos = 140*F maximum, ideally 100-120*F

4s & the 2200kv motor will be fine for anything upto about 40-45mph I'd say, how heavy is your truggy rtr & what lipos are you using?

Not 100% sure of the weight (I guess I could put it on a scale) I am using 2*2S Venom 30C 5000mah packs in series and I also have 1 Losi 25C 4S 5000mah pack it shouldnt be much heavier than any electric conversion.

I never really had a speed in mind with the 15T pinion it is way to much for the track I am gonna run on just heard that under gearing is a problem as well I clocked it with a GPS and a 17T Pinion at 45mph motor never got over 140

And where do I take the temp reading for the ESC cause it never seems to get over about 90 where I am taking the reading from and lipos although hard cased asre cool to the touch.

Was just trying to get a good mid point of punch and race track speeds not trying to break any speed records thats the next project with a buggy I think.

a 15-17t pinion will be just fine. it is harder to undergear these things than it is to overgear them, so don't be afraid to gear lower.

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

On 5s I had mine geared from 14-16 with the 52 tooth pinion... Never had heat problems.

For temp readings, try aiming the gun at the base of the motor wire bullet connectors, and in the side of the esc case between the slots- kinda tricky to get a good reading but you can get a general idea if the whole thing is hot or just warm..
