Come on you guys we know with all of you computer geeks out there that someone has to have some old unused memory laying about. All of our unused stuff is for desktops. Most of our laptop stuff is still in use and still running strong. I have an IT type friend who is sending one of our son's a box full of Corperate PC stuff to help him with building some learning projects. You know how they are always upgrading their systems and throwing out the old stuff. Our son is really motivated about anything computer realated so we have summined our friend for assistance. If there is anything related to what you are seeking I will let you know when it arrives. I am guessing it will be here next week some time.
IDK if they made 1gb sticks of ddr1 for laptops I'll stop at someplace tomorrow to see if they have anything, it won't be "free" but it shouldn't be more than $5-$10 shipped
There are a couple ebay auction for 256MB memory modules you're looking for. Under $10 shipped. The 512MB versions look to be about $20 shipped. I know it's not free, but is pretty cheap.
Are we talking standard DDR1 or 2? There's a differences between them even though their both 200pin. And what laptop model is this going into? The bios may or not even recognize 1gig memory.
The trouble with really old stuff is that many people throw them away since they aren't used anymore. I must have thrown away about a dozen sticks of RAM (none for laptops though) over the years for this reason. I couldn't even give them away, and holding on to them is just taking up room for nothing. And finding new parts of that generation is more expensive since demand isn't high.
I just called my local store (http://www.dyminsystems.com/dymin/index.asp) and they want $44.99 for a 1GB stick. They usually have a "bargain bin" with old stuff, but didn't have any PC2700 SODIMM RAM in there.
