CD mount and 1520 - 10.15.2010, 07:29 PM

The 1520 might be too much for the cd mount. Mines looking a touch bent after 2 runs.

Maybe you need some type of motor brace to hold that pepsi can.

I remember that as well. Seems the torque of the 1520 and 1717 may require a thicker C D mount and or a bit more bracing. I run a 1520 in my truggy and I am keeping a close watch of it

Can you just tighten the turnbuckle?

Maybe 7075-t6 instead of 6065-t6? I bent an 8ight mount and bent it back in a vice pretty easy...(1512)
Edit: Plastic spur, ripped teeth.

Arct1k, plastic spur, or metal? mesh issue?

I'm currently redoing my cybermaxx and I am doubling up the motor plate and top plate on my cd mount. 2x the monster

I think he needs to not only use 70 series, but needs an increase in the moment of inertia around the outside. This can be accomplished in many different ways, the challenge is in making it "universal" for everyones different applications. Possibly the most universal method may be to increase the height some, and make it thicker, then recess the area where the motor contacts the mount (kind of a mini can like the Tekno mounts).

ANyway you look at it, its going to be a more expensive mount system, and take up more room on the chassis. Personally, I could live with those.

Tekno Mount for my 1520 - 10.16.2010, 05:20 PM

Not that I am worried about getting blasted, but the mount is not enough by itself. I like the Tekno mount because it gives support along the length of the motor. I scraped the CD mount for an angle styled one I made from a piece of quarter inch thick two inch aluminum angle.

That is the only reason why I am not going with the center diff mount in my flux when I run the 1717. I just know it will bend.

When I built a center diff motor mount for my MGT, while being made of steel and welded together, I still took things like this into consideration. I overbuilt it to handle large motors, and I have braces running from the top of the motor plate down to the end of the horizontal plate above the center diff. It will not flex, bend, or warp. Ever. I think something of this nature should be incorporated into the RCM center diff motor mount design, just a bolt on type brace setup from the motor plate to the horizontal plate, IMO it would prevent any more bending issues.

That brace worked well for your application but I don't think it will work for Mike's, as Mike's weak point is aound the bearing housing. Sure, it won't bend too much if it pushes against the bearing but it might cause a sticky drivetrain. Also, as in Arctik's pics, there is nothing stopping it bending the other way. I agree with JT, it needs some more bulk to it.

Of course, when Mike made these I don't think he had a 1520 in mind

I was worried about that too. I was planning to run a crossbrace from the TVPs into the m3 holes on the top of the mount, where you have your turnbuckle mounted.

I hope it fairs better being a more solid mount, rather than a turnbuckle with plastic ends that may have some give. I too think the better soln would be a redesign in the mount (v2.0) The top plate needs some redesign to fit the larger spur gears as well as fatter motors (hits mounting screws.)

I understand what Mike is aiming for in this mount, and nothing's perfect 1st time out. What we may need is a HD version for larger trucks &/or bigger motors. Basically heavier, beefier, hopefully 70 series, and not so much mind to making it svelt.
