Too much power?

hey guys, just thought everyone would get a kick out of this, i know i did when i saw it! first test runs had severe cogging off the line which i can only attribute to the 3600 30c 6s turnigy pack we threw in to see how it ran. was the biggest 6s pack i had on hand. what are others usin for power with these beasts? got it to work pretty good with .1 tourqe control. he just bashes but i am wondering if he needs bigger packs. if so any recomendations? this is a 1717 and he wanted the biggest motor soo..... thinking he should stick with 6s?

You need a bigger 6s pack just to offset the weight of that motor!

I have an idea... Tell him to buy a couple of the new MA 3s packs and see how they run. I'm only half joking BTW...

True 150C!! I thought the 50c was the new stuff. The fact that they need to use the word true in front of the C-rating just shows that they know its unbelievable

for real though guys, any ideas on the cogging at startup? this is a pretty beefy motor i was expecting this buggy to fall apart under its power but it is having trouble off the line no matter how i set the esc. once its rolling it does great, this is why im thinking the 100 amps or so the batteries are rated for are the culprit. it does have the latest 1.29 firmware but so does my rc8 and it works great with it. anyone know what a good final ratio is for this motor?

after dinkin with it some more its acting like it is overgeared for the masher tires he wants to run. will pick up another pinion tomorrow at the track, then test it some more...... LOTS of testing.... will get a vid of this thing doin some landscaping in the desert as soon as i can.

A lower pinion and/or better batteries will help. You need to either lower the required start-up current, or give the motor what it wants with the gearing it has now.

What is it geared for right now? Assuming the motor can get what it needs from the batteries, I think gearing for 50mph or less would be a good place to start with all the torque it has.

not sure of the internal ratio but hes got it with a 15 tooth pinion to whatever the standard spur is on a 1.0 losi. tried it with a 4s same gearing and it seemed much happier. i think that with the giant tires and tall gearing 6s was a little much. gonna run a 4s pack through it tommorow with the same setup and get rid of the tourqe control to see if it will work. 0 timing 0 punch control low startup power kinda let it do its thing on 4s and see what its like as far as temps and performance. not sure what the best voltage is for this thing but a 45k rpm limit would lead me to beleive 4s will be plenty for what he wants. dont really need 35k rpm with a 6s in this lightish buggy i would say. plus his charger will only do 4s so it will save him a little cash.

Checked it out some more and he's got 15/48 right now. Way tall for 6s like 65 according to the speed calc. On 4s it's around 40 mph much better I think for bashing but may go lower depending on how it temps. Am thinking this motor will be happy enough with 4s around 40mph without getting too hot. Damn I told him to get an 1800 but he likey big mo mo's.

I don't think the 1717 will flinch doing 40 mph on 4s...

well i ran the 1717 on 4s....... WHOA! can we say axle snapping buggy backflipping tourqe? had a little talk with my buddy and explained the situation, which wasnt hard hes a smart dude with 40+ years of exp. running and seting up cnc factories all over the world. we talked about how 6s was way to much for his setup even if we geared it down. so on 4s with the same 15/48 gearing it works very well. i would say top speed is around 40mph not to bad, but getting there, holy cow! medium start power 0 timing and 50% punch control and the thing still wants to flip over at wot from a standstill. cant really say im suprised but more impressed with the seemingly limitless tourqe this motor puts out even on 4s. hes gonna order some 4s packs and we are planning on taking it out for some fun. i will make sure to bring a video camera so we can all have a laugh. really is a funny vehicle but perfect for bashng around if you ask me. and with about $250 for the whole setup i think he did well.

That thing has to be a bunch of fun. Massive torque rules. I put my 1520 in my ofna lx1e on 5s and geared it 18/51 (42mph no tire ballooning on the calc) and it just rips. Temps on everything are supercool too. Gotta love these big motors

I agree. Definatley would get the toolman Taylor stamp of approval! The first time I saw it with the tires on it I was like WTF? But coming from a race backround I had long forgotten how much fun it is to just "play" around with these things. That said this thing is hilarious to drive. The losi buggy platform handles superbly and the tires allow it to tackle prety much anything it happens upon. Now I just need to get him to convert his mugen 1/8 onroad think it's a mrx4....
