Wire/rod for homemade sway bars? - 04.13.2011, 04:36 PM

If I wanted to mess around with making some DIY sway bars, does anyone know what type of wire/rod I should use? Has anyone else made their own, and if so what did you use?

I have been looking at some suppliers online, but there are a ton of different types of steel and other alloys and I don't know what to use? I'd like to be able to bend it without heating, and have it retain shape, but if heating with a torch will work better I can do that too.

Have you ever used this? Will it hold it's shape without hardening it?

All of the sway bars I've seen are very hard. I couldn't bend them without them breaking. They are probably high carbon steel rod, maybe 1095, which is bent before being hardened. That's my guess.
