NASA Innovation Helicopter and Rover - 04.23.2011, 09:27 PM

Hey guys,
Here is a video of NASA using off the shelf technology to inspire a next generation of kids. These RC's are remote controlled via camera from the inside of a cockpit in a van. Pretty cool stuff.

Here is an official NASA video of it. (See links at bottom of page for full story)

(I built the Rover (A 1:5 scale Killer Krawler))

This years innovation day at JSC is this Wednesday. They have added a robotic arm to the rear of the Killer Krawler. It's controlled separately by a game controller. They will use it to pick up rocks and place them into a box that will be on my AX10.

Here is a picture of it in all of it's gear and a link to more pics. I'll be sure to post pics after Innovation Day.

Very nice. By the way, what department do you work at? My younger brother had been working for NASA since 2005. He's a mechanical engineer. I saw some pictures of the Mars rover with gold-plated rims which they say would help in minimizing radiation (I think those engineers just wanted some bling).

Yep, that SEV is very bling. Too bad the Constellation program is shelved right now.

I actually don't work for NASA. The group I am working with is called ACES and up until recently were working on the Orion craft.

Very cool pics! This is the one I got once when they brought it out for testing.

I think that's the program (Constellation) he used to worked on. Another victim of budget cuts just like the shuttle program. The ironic part is we will be paying the Russians millions of dollars to ferry our austronauts to the space station.

I like the suspension sytem of that rover. I wish I could put it on my truck so it will make it more offroad capable.

I'll let him know about you. You probably had seen each other over there.

Sounds like our paths certainly may have crossed. And yes it's disgusting about the hitching a ride with the Russians. I have heard talks about NASA contracting private firms for their lifts... better than the Ruskies I guess. :)

We just need a new president that will choose a better head of NASA than the one our current president did.

Innovation Day was today at Johnson Space Center here in Houston. Here are a couple of videos and pics showing off the new robotic arm they installed.

Hey I just emailed my younger brother and he said they were doing the vibration test during Innovation Day. I send him a link to your website so he can see your works of art. Hopefully he'll chime in here during his spare time.
