Team-losi 1/5 scale 4wd shortcorse truck bl setup? - 09.09.2011, 11:19 AM

Hi !

Have you guy's seen the new 1/5 scale shortcorse truck from losi ?
It's huge !! 4wd and the best of all it's built like a 1/8 truggy with a center diff and spurr mounted lengthwise and no stupid sidemounted gearbox :)
So it will be perfect for a bl-setupp ! 12s offcorse !! :)

But my question is if i can use a 200-250A boat or airplane esc ? the castle stuff seems to burst into flames all the time so i don't think i what to risk it and buy a mamba xl combo.

I think you'll want more power than this in the 5ive-T. I was putting more than 4000 Watts through my 19lb 4wd buggy - this will weigh significantly more.

Yes, you could use a boat or plane esc with mechanical brakes and no reverse (plane esc will require a pistix for use with a surface transmitter).

yes ..... but your 1527 616gr isnt the same than a 5692 of 880gr ....... the second is much bigger and have much more power/torque

also I have a monster 4x2 of 20lb using a "small" 1717 + 4s and I think use more power is crazy ....... also isnt the same runing in a rc track or bashing in a piece of open land ....... I speaking a good config for a rc track/circuit .....

I wasn't questioning the 5692 really - I have no doubt it could be made to work in a 5th scale.

However, I highly doubt that the 6s 150 esc is up to it - there's no way it can put out the power to run the 5692 in a 5th scale.

Furthermore, how much is the 5ive-T going to weigh? 30lbs? more? I don't think it's going to be anywhere near the 20lb range.

HPI had to throw that out in the media to try and salvage some sales. Either way though, the more the merrier. I see new racing classes, new tracks, and a huge influx of hobbyists into the 1/5 arena. Gonna be great!

As far as motor, esc, and battery choices for the Losi....it weighs 37lbs. Which is crazy! I know for me i would go with the Castle 2028 or a Neu 2230, the Castle Hydra 240HV, and 10s lipo saddle setup. I just wish they made the Castle 2028 in a lower KV model. I used this on my Rampage that weighed in at 27lb with a Neu 2215 and it worked awesome. I think the 2028 therefore would work great on the heavier Losi.

It's good to see 1/5 scale taking off. And someone at HPI has their head screwed on right, introducing an electric 2wd Baja would be silly (traction issues) a 4wd makes more sense designed for electric use from the get go. Gas guys can stick with hyped-up reed motors in their bajas and electric guys can well.. just be electric.

I see two things:

1)More competition from lighter 1/5 scale vehicles. If Redcat can make a Rampage XBE out of HSP Chinese models or whatver the parent company is called, then surely King Motors and Rovan will follow suit.

2)Battery issues. Imagine a propelling a 37 lb converted Losi 1/5er.. Gonna take some batteries to move that around, and if there's any battery failures.. it's gonna be big.

I have read a post on another forum that the HPI's new 1/5th scale brushless is just an extended Savage platform with electrics rumored to be a another Castle version of their 1717 and MMM esc. Could this be right? I hope not because this would be doing something that heaps of people out there have done already so what would be the point? I reeeeaaaally hope that post was just some misleading info. If it isn't an all new and true 1/5th platform I have a feeling it will be another flop just like the nitro Savage 5T.

There is a lot to like about the Losi 5ive but where the hell does 37lbs come from. Being built on a traditional truggy/buggy platform you would think it would be a lot lighter than that. Hopefully an electric conversion would shed some of that.

You could save some weight I guess but the comparison between a 5b, 5sc and losi 5t is 21 lbs, 28 lbs and 37 lbs. Some of the additional weight will be the driveline (for 4wd). One might hope it is beefed up to allow for the additional weight as well.

Well, The electric rampage i have ( http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...hlight=rampage ) is 4x4 and it runs right around 29lbs, so i dont know where the extra 8lbs comes from on the losi. But i dont foresee the extra poundage being a problem because with a 2215 and 10s, i wish my rampage weighed a little more. It bounces around like an overpowered slash.

Kind of goes back to my point about battery issues. My Redacat XBE weighs in the same range as my converted Muggy does, runs a CC 1520 and after racing the 1/8 scale guys last weekend for fun, my 6S 5000mah packs were hitting lvc at 14 minutes. Motor temp was 112f, esc was 117f and batts were 134f.

Just don't see how much more than that is needed (in terms of weight or power) for 1/5 scale. The XBE is basically a 1/8 scale design with a solid center diff, motor towards the front and sadle pack arrangement. Putting some short course bumpers fore and aft along with side guards and a roll cage to support a short course body is all that's needed.

For the price of a Baja 5B, that could be accomplished along with extra gems such as mud guards for the rear arms and cvd boots all around.

I am neglecting the fact that I replaced the stock motor with that CC1520, and a SportBec bec as well. Don't really need 6S for track use at all. Better stated, a motor with lower kv could be used. So... throw in a decent quality motor (leopard) of similar wattage output and maybe 1200kv and 10,000 mah 6S batteries and I think you've got a 1/5 race class that would rival the original Slash 2wd for bumper-to-bumper fun.

If you want Electric 1/5 SC 4x4 you may want to wait for the HPI. I saw it run a couple days ago and it was very impressive. It was very light for a 1/5. If the Losi (Gas) truly weighs in the 35+ lb range, the HPI will be less than 1/2 that. They were using a Castle motor on 6S and it flew around the track. I was still getting hit by roost when it was 30 feet away and accellerating down the front straight.
