Castle equipped Traxxas Spartan Eagle Tree - 10.02.2011, 05:14 PM

Did a quick run with my new Spartan with the Eagle tree on board. Had a High watts reading of 1947! I was running Turnigy 5s 5000mah 25C pack with another pack on the other side for ballast. Otherwise a 3 day old bone stock Spartan.

Run was cut short when a solder joint on the jumper plug I made(for running a single pack) came apart

So what are your impressions of the New Spartan?

Interesting graph. With pack voltage going almost to 30 volts, I would say it caught the solder joint coming apart.

First couple runs I did using the Jumper plug yesterday I noticed it was getting pretty warm. Just a Traxxas plug with a wire connecting both sides, one side desoldered. Not sure where the 30v came from because I wouldn't expect much regen braking on from a prop in water.

As for the boat itself, it's a pretty decent. I've never had another boat or driven anything else so I really can't compare it to anything. The traxxas radio sucks so I put a spectrum rx in, get a lot more steering throw now but I have range issues and I've tried two spectrum rxs. I would like a little bigger rudder to have more slow speed turning ability, it turns on a dime at speed but going slow forget it. 4s is fast enough to have fun, 5s can be scary but it's awesome to see it shooting a roost as it crosses the lake, doubt I'll be running 6s anytime soon. I want to get a better prop for it, not looking for a huge gain but a good sharpened and balanced prop should add some efficiency. I knew boats where hard on lipos but WOW, this thing will drain that 5s 5Ah lipo in less than 10 minutes, even with some cruising just up on plane. That pack is almost brand new, ran it about 5-6 times in my truggy and could get almost 20 minutes on the track with it.

Overall, I'm very happy and glad I bought it. Spent about 4 hrs at the lake with it today, I have a 4s, 5s, 2x2s, and the stock 7cells to run plus a duo charger. I ran all packs 3 times except the stockers. Other than racing that's more than I've used all my trucks combined in the last 6 months. Can't wait to go back tomorrow!

Does it have space to run parallel larger packs or do you just run a single ?

Did you try the Spekky marine RX ?

Cheers

Theres plenty of space for packs, if you really wanted to you could fit 4 packs in the boat at once.

Haven't tried the spektrum main rx yet, this is my first boat and I just got it. I've been trying to figure out if the mr200 will work with my dx3r

Better graph - 10.05.2011, 05:46 PM

Heres a better graph. High watts where 2076, approaching 3HP. Again this run was on 5s 5Ah Turnigy 25C. This was almost a full run, was cut short by me getting a little crazy and I flipped it for the first time. There where a lot of wide open running here, I was doing laps at the end just before flipping and that was constant full. I'm surprised at how much the load varied at wide open. Anyhow, this should be a good indicator of how hard a boat is on lipos! You may not get the high peaks like a land based vehicle but the average Amp draw is double what my RC8T sees in a race.

Not sure what's up with the timeline on the bottom of the graph but the run was at least double that, it was about a 7-9 minute run
