Using a different radio system with the Traxxas XO-1 - 02.10.2012, 09:46 AM

I have been unsuccsessfully trying to get some correct information on how to use a non-Traxxas radio system in my XO-1(you can't as of right now) The mods have closed and edited in misinformation on the thread linked below to mislead new customers into buying before they know the truth. Have a look, What do you guys think? Or am I just being a baby about using my $20 radio or any other radio?

http://traxxas.com/forums/showthread...0-Different-tx

1. The range is lacking compared to my $20 radio.

2. Until castle link live gives me ESC temp or something new at the tx I would rather use my radio.

Maybe the XO-1 is not for you but they are adding this radio and esc to all the new emaxxs and erevos naturally.

This is what I get when I try to castle link my mamba extreme. Traxxas is telling people(in the link above)to just click off the castle link live in the castle link. This is what I get when I try to link up.

I don't quite understand- have you updated your castlelink software on your PC before trying to connect the esc to it via the castlelink device?

EDIT:

Ah, I see the issue now- the firmware on the esc isn't recognised by the current ( latest ) version of the castlelink program, so you can't alter any settings on the esc via castlelink, only via castlelink live/ traxxas link with with an iPlod.

I suppose then the next best option is to adjust the settings via iPlod until you are happy, then just recalibrate the esc to your new radio ( set throttle, brake & reverse end points )- or is that what you are unable to do?

Thanks for looking SN
There is no castle-link or live anything available right now with the XO. No LVC, No punch, nothing. You just get that note that I posted above when you try to link up.

The mamba arms without the tx powered on. It gets a neutral signal from the rx. This is the problem when trying to use other radios. The Mamba just sits there and beeps like it's not even wired to a radio. I even tried a servo tester.

The latest Traxxas directions say to un-check the Live link button in the castle-link and unlock it and your good to go with other radios. That's would be great if I could even c-link up with my ESC.

The Mods say they don't want to intentionally spread misinformation. So they keep editing in more bogus directions pretending it works after they closed the thread(when we told them it still does not work). Then they proceeded to shoot the messenger with a don't shoot the messenger message. Now the radio problem has been forbidding to talk about over there.

It's a little silly but it's not the "best radio on the market". When was the last time you had to lift your 2.4 radio above your head for more range? It was the last time I drove my XO-1 for me.

Hmm.

Can't you uncheck the live link button & unlock the esc via the traxxas radio & iPlod, then swap to a different radio?

What happens if you try the above, or you just plumb your new radio in, turn on the tx, then power up the esc & rx?

As far as I know suicideneil is on the right track, use the tqi and ipod app application to unlock the esc and uncheck live link then you should be good to go.

I was watching your thread over on the traxx forums, these guys are nuts. save you self the hassle my friend, selling the traxxas radio and esc in a combo, it will more than pay for a XL2 that's what I did. Not to mention the stock set up lags compared to futaba 3pks and insure other radios

I wish it was that simple but the live link button is nowhere to be found.

I've ordered a EzRun 150 to try a different brand esc and use my radio.

Castle has been very disappointing IMO in the way they have disappeared after claiming these great new capabilities of their new mamba that has yet to be seen.

Examples:
Esc temp
Live esc adjustments

I just want to use my own radio forget all that other stuff.

So you going with a EZrun 150 over a castle ESC......... Talk about a step in the wrong direction. All these issues are TRAXXAS issues because they asked for it to cover there own asses...... IMO castle still makes the top of the line stuff for a price you cant beat........why both with the EZFIRE 150?! You can sell the TQI with the RX telemetry stuff and the ESC with 400 dollars in a heart beat..... i sold mine in 12 hours!?!?! and one hour after the sell i bought a XL2 for 250 dollars........ I made money back on the sale!?! so how is it more complicated!!?!?? You already have a good futaba radio!? i dont see what the issue here is!?

I ran my XL2 with 6S on the stock 1717 (only electronic worth a dam on the car BTW) over 100 MPH and the ESC didnt break a sweat. After a full battery discharge the ESC was 110 degrees............. WHO NEEDS LIVE TEMPS?!!?! and i still made it home to play with the data logging on the castle link?!?! what more does one need?!?!

If you ask me, traxxas released the XO-1 before Castle was ready to go live with all these nice features that traxxas wanted; they should have waited until CastleLink LIve was listed as a firmware update on the Castle wesbite, rather than only being something that comes pre-loaded onto the esc but doesn't function with the traxxas app or the existing castlelink software.

I'm sure the features that Patrick has mentioned will work, it just isn't ready yet.

SuicideNeil:
I wish Traxxas would just come out and say that then if that is the case, not cover it up and close the thread.

MiamizFinest:
I already own a XL2 and just about every other esc castle has made. I was a major castle fanboy.

It was easy for you to buy another esc. It sounds like you have a nice big LHS in town that stocks larger ESCs other dissatisfied costumers may not have that same luxury.

EzFire that's a good one! No futaba here just a cheap looking, shinny plastic button, big gaudy screen $30 FlySky gt3b I would rather use over the TQI. I know your right about making some coin by selling the stock system. I need to put mine up on ebay pronto.

Thanks for the help guys.

OK,

Well, this is what's going on:

1. Castle Link Live is operational on the TQ radio. New features will be available soon to do some very cool things through Link Live.

2. The release of software that supports the Mamba Monster Extreme (and CLL) hasn't been made public yet. It will go live sometime this week. We are doing some final beta testing right now.

3. CLL, while being supported in the next software release, isn't implemented on Castle Link yet -- so no "live mode" programming from the PC/USB yet...

Thanx!

Patrick
