For most motors, you want to keep the total rpms at or below between 30,000-35,000 rpm for best efficiency. So, you just divide 35000 (max rpm) by the kv to get the desired voltage. Then you divide that by 1.2 for NiMH cells or 3.7 for Lithium cells.

For 16 cells, that would be over 53k - a bit on the high side. I'd stick to right about 12 cells if it were me.

12-16 cells is a rather large difference. though the 8XL would be a good overall choice. (kv-wise, depending on the vehicle?)

For 12 cells it's okay. But 14/16 is pushing it..

What motor is it?

They should be the same. Maybe one is rated under load and the other rated no load?

... but he doesn't list the temperatures of the components after a full run with the vehicles going at those speeds. If he can't give you a specific (or approximate) kv for the motor, then he is withholding information, which is just about one of the worst things to do to a customer (IMO).

Shoot for yourself, but those motors are hot.... the fact that he doesn't want to share his 'secret' receipt tells me enough.

it's just a hot XL motor, no wonder it's fast...

I wish i did stay away from him.
The worst thing was is tha i had already found RC-monster but not its forum and didn't think to see what people thought of his service and liked his conversions so chose to buy from him. BIG MISTAKE.

I bought a XLT1 and a BK 9920 speed control from him

he didn't tell me the Kv of the motor as mentioned before on th eforum and he sent me a BK marine 9920 speed control instead which is useless for cars and is now just gathering dust.

This wasn't necessarily his fault but i had to pay customs about £45.00 ($90) first which just made it even worse.
