Heat problems with Mambamax/stampede - 11.17.2006, 05:21 PM

I'm running 2s lipo, 4600kv mambamax setup and oversized Emaxx sized tires. Just can't seem to get these mamba max motors to keep from getting to hot. I've tried gearing from 90t spur/13t pinion, all the way up to 24t pinion. Speed controller stays under 120F but motor will just keep getting as hot as I let it. I killed my first mamba motor letting it get up over 200F (more like 250F actually LOL). Anyone else running close to the same setup? Is the mamba max motor simply to whimpy for the pede/oversized wheels?

Yep! 4600kv motor with oversized tires in a Stampede is plain rediculous.
You need a motor with much lower kv.
How about a Lehner motor?

I agree. Either a different motor or some way of gearing down more. You could try adding motor heatsinks and a fan, but that doesn't fix the fact that the motor is being overworked.

The Mamba Max motors aren't 540 size either, the rotor is between a 380 and 540, but closer to a 380. You could get a Feigao 8s which has a kv similar to the 4600, and the 8s shouldn't get as hot since it's a larger motor.

I've had the same problem with my rustler... mailed the motor back yesterday. even little 5 min runs would heat it up...

Sounds like I better use a different motor. Too bad I have 4 of these lemon mamba motors. The mamba max speed controller owns......but WOW thier motors are worthless. I have 2 Lehner 1920 motors, 3 Lehner Basic XL, 1 Lehner Basic, 2 BK 10 turns, and + my mamba motors. Not a fricken one of them will stay under 150F on my pedes and rusties. Im about to just buy a Lehner 1950 for my pede and maybe it will be able to handle the load without overheating. Oh wait....I can't because the pede has to have the 1/8th shaft.

What about you guys. Are there any of you that have a brushless pede or rustler with max sized tires that doesnt overheat? I'm not talking about 10 or 15 minute runs then let it cool down. I'm talking about running down a 8000mah lipo pack full throtle in the dirt or sand. If so then will you please post your, speed controller, motor, and gearing.

I wouldn't say the MM motors are worthless as I have no problem with the 4600 in my Jato. I think the motor is simply loaded too much. I would gear down at least 3 or 4 teeth and use 3s lipo to regain the speed.

I've run a Feigao 540 8S in my FLM Pede for several GP3300 packs in a row with motor temps staying below 130F. I do have maxx sized wheels on there, but the tires are pretty low profile at 4.5", but I'm geared at 17:87, so it wouldn't be real hard to compensate with larger tires.

By the way, which maxx sized tires exactly are you running? Some of those things are awful heavy.

I am as low geared as I can go. 90t spur 13t pinion. I have a 3s lipo and it is out of the question for this truck.....WAAAYYY too fast. I could probably find a 12t pinion, and will, but I dont think it will fix my problem. The pede just doesnt alow low enough gearing.

I take back my comment about mamaba motors being worthless. They are just no good for my application. For those that can gear down low enough to run 3s lipo they probably work great.

Brushless Jato. I want one. How hard is it to convert to electric?

Pretty easy actually. Here's mine (the conversion starts on page 4).

I have three different sets. Proline Bow-Tie MT, Panther Boa, and Panther Komodo like what you have there. The larger Bow-Tie and Boa tires do best for my terain. I find it amazing you can run several GP3300 packs and not get over 150F. What kind of terrain are you driving in? Feigao is like the one brand I havent tried. I figured the my BK 10s motors would be pretty close to a Feigao. I've been looking at both the Feigao 380c-13T and the Feigao 540c 9L.

Also. What do you get for run times with your setup?

Most of my time was spent running it in low grass and some dirt on a ball field. I had a few small jumps set up, but nothing extreme. I would have to guess I averaged 12-15 minutes per pack, running two packs back to back.

I am extremely happy with my 8S in my Pede. There is another guy over on Ultimaterc.com that has both an 8S and a 4600 MM and is much more impressed with the power of the 8S. My guess is it has to do with a larger rotor and the extra torque available. Also, if you do a search on here, you'll find a guy running a Feigao 380C 6L in a Stampede with stock E-Maxx tires with no problems.

Hey...when you say that you want to run a 1950 motor...you're kidding, right?
