My BL Savage updated -
12.20.2006, 10:28 PM
Hi,
Just some updated pics of my savage conversion. I had 8 X buggy shocks on it with Nova towers then changed to LST shocks but found that I am not good enough to tune the shock setting. Just recently, I reverted back to buggy shocks with Twisted Toys Delrin shock towers & that's what you see here.
I am still running 7XL with 16/49 gearing, 5S lipo & now a Quark 125 esc. This setup is still too hard on the esc. The esc is still cutting out due to thermal overload after a few laps round the local make shift track. I am going to reduce the pinion to 15T & I have a 8XL on the way but will need to redesign the mounting bracket to accommodate it.
other than the thermal problem, the truck runs great.
Regards,
Joe Ling

Are you using a heat sink on the quark? It makes a big difference.
I see you have plenty of fans, but I found that with a good heatsink I dont even need a fan unless its a really hot day.

Hi jhautz,
I am actually using quite a sizeable heatsink on the Quark. I flipped the esc with the plastic facing down, installed a CPU (mini-itx type) heatsink + 2 transistor heatsink on the aluminium side. They are held together with thermal conductive tape.
The ambient temperature also plays a significant role I think. When I run my truck, outside temperature typcially ranged from 30 deg C to 35 deg C. In addition, humidity is pretty high too.
I have to gear down & make a new mount for a milder motor I think.

Joe Ling

What kind of speeds are you getting now? I dont have a savage so Im not farmiliar with all of the gear ratios to know if that is high or not.
I just noticed on your profile, you are in Malaysia. Where about? I was just over not to long ago for work. I was in Penang for a week and then Kuala Lumpur for only one day. I liked it. A little warm, but beaultiful up in the Penang area. All I remember from Kuala Lumpur was that it was VERY busy. And I'm used to busy... I live in the down town in Chicago.

Do you like it more now than you did before?
The pinion drop should help with temps on esc.
Peace!

Hi coolhandcountry,
I like the current configuration a lot more than when I had LST shocks. Maybe this is because I mainly run the truck round a track & not just bashing about. The shocks performed more consistantly over jumps & rough stuff. What I need to do is to work on getting a wing mounted in a proper position to make a difference.
Hi jhautz,
With the current gearing (16/49), I should be getting a theoretical speed of about 43.76mph (70.45Km/h) (gear ratio of 22.44 to 1 for 1st gear & 15.57 to 1 for second gear). If i drop 1 tooth to 15T(1st gear 23.94 to 1, second gear 16.6 to 1), theoretical top speed should be around 41.02mph (66.05 Km/h)
I am in East Malaysia on the island of Borneo where head hunters live. A sleepy town compared to KL or Penang.

Hi,
Some updates. I think I have finally managed to tame this beast. I swapped out the Quark for a BK warrior 9920. Dropped 1 tooth to 15T. From the brief run on Saturday, the max amp draw was around 70A (using eagletree data logger) & max esc temp was 70 deg C (for a short period only not sure what happened there) but mainly hovered around 40 to 45 deg C. A few minutes into the test, I busted my rear left shock. However, in a short time, I managed to draw 2100mah from the battery.
Sunday came & I did another run. The truck was very quick & punchy & I had some difficulty controlling it (maybe need some shock tuning). The esc temp was stable between 45 to 45 deg c (used a temp gun to check after every few laps). Ran the truck until there was a noticable drop in performance. All this took around 8 to 10 minutes of hard driving around a relatively technical but smooth track (mostly large radius bends with a few tight 180 degree trurns & a few jumps). Turned out that one of my lipo has ballooned. Time to get some lipos from Mike.
Happy & sad all rolled into one.
Regards,
Joe Ling

Cool! That looks like some good temps.
Sucks on the lipo though.
Did you have a LVC on the sytem?
Peace!

If you are ordering Lipos from Mike also add this to your order.

That will save you from repeating the mistake.
Glad to hear it running well now.

Hi ***RC***,
Thanks for the compliment.
Hi coolhandcountry,
Thanks. I did have an LVC but took it out & installed a homemade 3S lipo scream (sirens sounds at 9V) but I guess that malfunctioned somehow. When I checked the voltage of the pack at home, it was 8.29V. This meant that while the truck was still running, it must been much lower than that. That's how it puffed. Pretty expensve mistake. Odd thing is the 2S pack somehow survived.
Time to get some cheaper lipo. The prices at maxamps seems pretty good. I can get a 5S 4K pack combo for the same money I paid for the puffed 3S 3.2k pack (bought more than 1 year ago). As a consolation, this 3S pack was in fact a salvaged pack. More than 6 months ago while I was running this pack, it suddenly lost all voltage. Turned out that one of the tabs in the middle cell had somehow disconnected from the PCB connecting the 3 cells together. Had the pack on the shelf for quite a few months before screwing up the courage to do some dissection & resolder the broken tab back to the pcb & adding hyperion balancing tabs to the pack. Hmm...I have a puffed 2S pack lying around somewhere, maybe I can still save this pack with a frankenstein style reanimation :013:
Sorry for the rant. I'm kind of upset at my own silly mistake.
Regards,
Joe Ling

Hi jhautz,
Thanks for the info.
I don't see any info on how many cells the li saver can take. I have a couple that can do up to 6 cells that I bought from Mr. C a while back. It's more bulky than what Mike has & requires some soldering. I was careless in that I took out a perfectly working LVC & installed something that was untested (in the field anyway) & paid the price for it. Irony is that this 3S lipo alarm was installed using the hyperion tabs connected to the 3S pack. I thought this was pretty neat if only the alarm worked (I have another exact same alarm in my flying object & it works perfectly - bloody loud).
Regards,
Joe Ling

The li saver mike has is for 2s to 12s. I have one on my 12s porject and it seemed to work. The ones mike sells is the car version to so that helps for no wide open reverse. It self detects voltage.
Peace!

Hi coolhandcountry,
Thanks for the info. Auto detect with no soldering is good. The ones that I have has some small switches to toggle the no. of cells.
